    car not starting

Hey guys, I just went out to start my car, and it doesn't start. I hear the starter clicking, but the engine does nothing. The last time I drove the car was a week ago, and I only drove it down the road to Wal Mart, and then back obviously. Before that though, I drove it 2 hours down the highway. So I don't think it's my battery, but I don't know what else it'd be. I just put in a new amp recently, but it uses the same wires as the old one, so I don't think that has anything to do with it. Any ideas on what's going on?

If you let the car sit a lot, its probably the battery, otherwise the remote wire for the amp could be hooked up wrong and be causing it to kill the battery. Turn your headlights on and see how bright/dim they are. Get your battery tested first, and if it still won't start, check your connections from battery to starter. Try tapping on the starter to get it to start up if all else fails.

The headlights seemed pretty dim, but it's hard to tell. I also noticed when the key is in the accessory position, the stereo doesnt come on. The battery is a crappy Duralast, and has no indication as to when it was purchased or when it should last until. Basically, it'll last until it stops working, haha. Way to go, Duralast .

You just answered your own question. Get another battery either diehard gold which comes with a year warrantee which it does for me or get an optima one.

Don't just go get a new battery, as tempting as it seems. It could be a battery issue, or it could also be an alternator issue. For all you know it could be a bad connection, bad ground. The battery doesn't have power, theres no doubt about that, but you don't know why it doesn't have power. Get your battery/alternator tested. I work at autozone myself, so any store can do an in car alternator test. Call them and ask them to look up the warranty for your battery, if there is one.

I forgot, Duralast regular red top batteries come with a 2 year free replacement, and the gold ones come with 3 year free replacement.

We tested my battery with a voltmeter, and it claims 10.71V. When we were installing my amp, the voltage dropped to 9.6, and the engine still started, but didn't turn over. So I'm thinking it's the starter that's the problem. I haven't tried hitting it with anything yet to try and un-jam it, I may do that next. I've also got a battery charger that I'm charging up to see if that helps any. Oh, and also, my battery claims 3 year free replacement, but I have no way of knowing how old it is.

The Car should not be starting with only 9.5 volts anyway. You need to charge it, and see if it holds the charge.

What do you mean by the engine started but didnt turn over?

I was pretty vague about that. I heard the engine cranking, but it wouldn't turn over.

My car wouldnt start also. I bought a battery and it still dindt start. I foundout it was the distibutor and starter. MY car was cranking but no ignition. Now she runs pretty clean. So for you check for spark, and check your whole fuel delivery system.

ok yeah, its battery like everyone else says and what probably drained it was your amp -- i put in a new system without upgrading my alternator, and the same thing hapened to me: the battery lost all charge - and this was on a brand new Duralast... everythings fine now that i took out the amp unti li do my other uprgrades

                          good luck

I got a new battery (my choices were a $80 duralast gold, or a $130 optima red top...i went wit the duralast, as it had more cold cranking amps and had an identical warranty to the optima) and the car starts fine. Hopefully my alternator is still okay, I guess we'll see if the battery holds a charge.
