    Cv Joint Help... Please!!

I was doing cv joints on my 91 accord today, and when i was putting in the new axle, I couldn't get it closer than 1/8 of an inch from the tranny. Someone told me it would be fine like that, so i put it back together, and i drove it around the block, and it kept popping, i tried beating the axle in, but it won't go... what do i do?

On the axle theres a c ring that goes on the splind part of the axle that help locks the axle in place on the tranny side. Check and make sure that the ring is still in place or the old one is stuck down in there.

Also make sure the splines are lining up right and that they are not damaged.

the new axle should have the c-ring already in there. check again. most likely that isn't the case here. it's rare that it falls out, but check anyway. are you sure you have the correct axle for the car? there shouldn't be any slack whatsoever. are we talking about driver side, or pass side?

Passenger side, I managed to force it so it is probably... less then 1/8th of an inch on one side, flush on the other, BUT, see i'm gonna sound dumb, but I left the top bolt of the damper fork off, and I was getting popping noises when I went over a bump, as well as my first right turn....

Not, the damper fork, still the same noise going around turns at 5 miles an hour. It pops some weird pop, you'd have to hear to understand.

when u stuck in ur axle did u make sure u didnt let the outer joint seperate? if it seperated ur gonna have to hope u can work the joint back together. Y did u have a damper fork bolt off? all u should take off is the 4 lugs, then the 2 brake caliper bolts, then the axle nut, and then the lower control arm castle nut. thats all that should come apart. i did mine in like 20 minutes.

i just hope you don't have a bad axle again. it can happen especially if they are remanufactured axles. where did you get the replacement axles from? i predict about 4 out of 5 reman axles are bad or are going to break again in a year or two. this is where lifetime warranties come to play. i've replaced my driver's side 3x and pass side 2x in 2 years. kinda crappy deal eh?

Try and record the popping, so we can hear it.

Dude, i got the same prob.I put both new axles, one of them pulled out completly out of the tranny.I fixed it but i dont know if its good enough.Just like you said, it looks like theres an 1/8" spacing.I don't know if there fixed.I havent driven yet cuz i havent had time to put my new starter yet.I think i'm gonna take a pair of big ass pliers and hit them with a hammer to get them to pop in.

My stepfather has a 90 EXR and he needed to replace the left side axle shaft, so he bought one new at Canadian Tire. Something was wrong with the shaft, as it was constantly popping out of the transmission. Finally, after it had popped out 4 times on his way home from work one day (20 minute drive), he pulled the new shaft out and bought one from a junkyard. He measured the two shafts, and the new one he bought from Canadian Tire was about 1/8 inch shorter than the one he got from the junkyard. He returned the new shaft, installed the junkyard one and the problems were solved, thank god. Why would a new shaft be too short like that? It was a relief when the junkyard shaft worked like it should, the problems he was having with the new shaft was really pissing him off, and he thought the problem was with the car itself and he almost sold it for 400 bucks and bought a Dodge Caravan.
