    Problem after cleaning tps sensor.

I got a CEL 07 today so I decided to check the TPS and clean it out. I took off the tps, everything looked ok inside, then I cleaned the plug for it with WD40, turned it the farthest I could toward the passenger side, started it up and car revs to 6k non stop. The seal inside there crumbled when I took it off, can that be the problem? Also, maybe the WD40 was a bad idea?

Did you set the TPS to stock specifications? You can't just toss it on there and go. The TPS sensor may be bad, and spraying it with WD-40 was a bad idea.

Yes, spraying it w/ wd40 was a bad idea.Take it out and let it dry out overnight

i didnt spray the tps just the plug that connects to it, i think its conducting current and sending 5v to the ECU, so i guess i will let it dry... will i get a vacuum leak if that seal is not there?

yeah. That happened to me with a bored out throttle body. You messed up big time. The tps is everything. Let it air out, blow it out, and if that don't work get a new one

WD-40 doesn't solve all the problems of the world. I would think twice before being liberal with the WD-40, especially on electrical

Get a new one, take a voltage meter and set it to O.E. specs...

WD-40 doesn't really dry out so to speak. It will turn from a liquid to more of a greasy film. I'd take NoSloCB7's advice and get a new one. That way you have nothing to worry about and you'll be back to new.

The best way to clean something that is or might be electrical is compressed air. it's safe and has the pressue to blow off whatever crap is on/in there.

If your worried about moisture getting in there with the new one is to get some di-electric grease and put it on the electrical connections. That's perfectly fine for it. It's no big deal if you dont do it though.

Carb cleaner will clean it off.

That stuff will evaporate after a couple minutes

thanks guys, and if i want to start the car and configure the tps to factory specs i need to turn it all the way towards the passenger side so it wont rev up the engine?

You don't start the car . You configure it first. Follow the instructions in the haynes manual.

I don't know if anyone here knows this or not, but you CANNOT buy just a TPS sensor, it comes preassembled and calibrated from the factory. You're going to have to spend like a billion dollars for a new throttle body or go to the junkyard and find a used one...just my $.02
