    Running car with no exhaust?

I will more than likely have my H22 swap complete tonight and I am going to use the JDM manifold so my exhaust has no intention of mating with it. I have heard that running no exhaust manifold can burn up the valves. Is this true with only an exhaust manifold and nothing from the DP back? I need it running for about a week. What exactly causes the valves to burn up, nowhere for the heat to transfer to????

    Thanks guys.

Your car is going to be louder than a motocycle.

Um..you want to get that fixed asap...reason being it will go into the interior...

As long as there is some kind of header routing the smoke away from the engine you should be fine.

Yep, i ran my H22 around for a couple days with no exhaust and had no problems, aside from it being loud as hell, and made my car smell like exhaust. As for burnt valves, I dont thing that will cause it. Ill tell you what will though...

A snapped timing belt. Thats what happened to my F22! Thank god I already bought my H22!

I'll be running the manifold, just nothing after that.

Yeah i'll go ahead and get a down pipe fabricated up pretty soon then. But it won't hurt the motor, that's good to know.

don't know where you are located, but out here, if you got no exhaust, your valves will warp because of the rapid cooldown. but that only happens in winter around here. had a bud that ran no exhaust on his pickup and after one nice cold day, boom bada bing, toasted it. valves were not sealing properly after getting the truck nice an warm driving around town and lettin it cool down in single digit temps. guess they like cool down at the same rate as everything else.

I ran the exhaust on my white 91 EX for months with holes in the "S-bend" area of our exhaust piping. Anyhow, when I finally had my exhaust fixed (temporarily) because it started to get louder, I noticed cylinder #3 is dead (misfires at idle) and pulled cyl #3 spark plug and it made no difference while car was idling.

Anyhow, my theory is that somehow running the car with them holes in the exhaust for so long, may have to do with why cylinder #3 most likely has burnt exhaust valve(s) and doesn't hold compression. I haven't verfied 100% that it's the exhaust valves though, all I know is that cylinder #3 does not hold compression. However, why just cylinder #3 then? I'm not sure. I await to disect the engine when I get the built one dropped in.

I'm not worried about it though, still starts and runs, I have my red 91 DX almost prepped to start driving. I have a built motor going into the white 91 EX eventually.

im with him, i ran my h22 when i did my swap a little in the shop to get it running off the header, but... with a high reving zero tolerance engine like the h22 ... the lack of back pressure could be just enough to mess shit up... why risk it? rigged up a blate so that an after market 2 whole dp would fit the h22's header... i wish i had a picture.. but got not camera.. good luck...
