Please tell me it's not my alternator...

I've been getting a whining noise from under my hood for a little while. At first I thought maybe it was the power steering pump. No big deal, I can drive without it... But now, I've been noticing that the whining not only happens when I turn my wheel at low speeds (or a stop) but also when I hit the brakes. Once or twice my console lights flickered... they've been going dim occasionally for a little while as well.

Am I right in thinking it could be the alternator? The battery light hasn't come on, so it's apparently still charging the battery well enough.

I think I still have my old F22 alternator, which worked just fine. Would that work on the H22 if that one is bad? I'd rather not have to go out and pay for a new one if I don't have to!

Finally, if that is the case, how hard is it to change yourself? I think I might be able to do it...

could be the wheel bearings making the noies , didnt they replace them when you had the rotors done. the alternator shouldnt be hard to change at all and i think you can use the f22 one it should fit.

That's good to hear... I know it's definitely not the wheel bearings... I believe they were changed, and it's definitely a power component of some kind making the noise. I'll show you if I see you anytime soon...

sounds like alternator, or it could be both
cheapest thing to do is try the belt first, the smarties is to just replace both.
i just change both like a month ago and now my car runs fine.
its not hard to do at all, just take ur time with it. i changed my alternator with the power steering pump still on, it was no sweat.

u just remove the adjustment nuts and the bolts holding the alternator in place (2bolts, top and bottom) the belt losens up once u start to remove the adjustment nut. its easy as hell.
        took me like 20-30minutes.

Ok cool, thanks Jay. I'll probably take you up on that. Do you know where to measure it from? I have no clue (though I'm sure I could figure it out...)

I'm hoping it's just the belts. Of course, I'm planning on getting some AEM pulleys, and I think they come with belts. I might as well just do that if I have to replace the belts!
