As the title states, i'm curious as to how effective and how reliable a DIY rebuild would be.... my search didnt really come up with anything of use, but basically, i see places selling turbo rebuild kits such as on ebay and on websites.... has anyone personally had experiece with rebuilding thier own turbo? if i send it out to phoenixturbo where i got the turbo from, itll run me $300 and 2 weeks turnaround time.... i can "supposedly" rebuild with an ebay kit for 90ish$ and as quikkly as i can personally do it, which would prolly only be a few days since i dont deal with rebulding tons of turbos all day like PT..... only thing stoppin me is that i kno 4 a fact phoenix-t rebuildoing it will be very reliable, my question is how reliable would a DIY be? and according to a couple DIY rebuild threads i'lv seen from google, its not extremely complicated.. only thing i would think would be necesary would be to rebalance it which would be literally impossible for me since i dont have anythin that can spin the turbo and test it to 250,000rpms, lol.... let me kno what you guys think...

I say fuck it if you want it done right take it to them I know ken personally everything that hes taught me and hes a real consumer not like the rest of these asshole shops that bullshit you and just about the money he actually wants to see you satisfied. Thats the reason why he gets my vote when it comes to doing business with.

do it yourself. use your head and learn something. usually its just the seals on turbos that go bad. i *think* and dont quote me on it, but you dont need a rebalance if you dont get a new compressor wheel or turbine

one of my main issues is that i dont have2weeks to be shit out of a car... i would NO other means of transportation from and to school and workso that would be a bigg issue.... lets say i decide to do it myself, and i do everythin perfectlyand double and tripplecheck myself... how rebiable do you think it will be without a rebalance? i dont mind spendin the $$ for Ken to do it, but its just the turn around time that will kill me.... plus i mean i sdoubt theresanything else major wrongwithit becaise other than crazy amount of oil blowin thru it, it work perfectly... builds boost, sounds perfect and it looks fine......

hmmmm.... i did think of that before, but it seemed like too much w3rk to have to remove alll that shit and replace the shitty stock NA stuff.... i guess if i cant find any local shops that can rebuild turbos i might really be forced to do that.... that would suck a lotta balls, but i guess it could be a last resort.... i'm not even gunna bother tryin 2 rebuild it myself cause at least if i'm spendin the extra $$ for a shop to do, i kno itll be done right and itll be reliable..... maybe a few years down the line if it happens again, ill try toi do it then cause it wouldnt be worth the $$, but as of now i think a 2 year old turbo with less than 10,000 miles on it is deff worth the $300 or so rebuild.... thanks for the input guys... wish me luck with runnin NA if i must.....

yea there sure as hell aint no damn shops anywhere near me that do the rebuild themselves... i gotta talk to Ken then, i didnt know he would be able to hook me up with a quick as turn around time.... i might decide to simply buy a brand new one, and use this one as an experimental rebuild on my own.... i'm gunna call up Ken right after i do my comprssion test to see what he can do for me... thanks h22sparle....
edit yea Ken said hes madd busy with rebuilds so itll still be like 2 weeks anyway.... i'm deff looking into just buying a new one if i can afford it right now.....Last edited by ChroNicBoosT; 09-29-2005, 06:24 PM.
