    crazy oil leak...

my 93 SE with the stock F22 is at the dealership and they suspect this annoying oil leak is coming from the crankshaft main seal (rear main) on the transmission side. It's an auto btw. anyways, my car has been babied and the oil religiously changed before I bought it. it has 168,000 miles. the rear main going bad on a honda seems odd.

    any thoughts/experiences pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease?

this is just a shot in the dark but are you sure it is motor oil? could it be just tranny oil? when i pulled my pass side axle, about half a quart of tranny oil spilled out. maybe there is a seal in your pass side axle that just needs replacing .

they just called me after i told them to replace the pan gasket first. they did that and he said that it "appears" to have fixed it! so thank God..

the technician noticed that my EGR ports were clogged so I'm having them done before I pick it up. i knew our engines were more reliable than that.

i will say one thing tho... if i were a girl or someone who was clueless about cars, I would have been convinced to just have him replace the crank seal at $600 bucks. the dealership i went to is usually pretty honest but he had even me freaked out about it... if anybody else has crank seal stories i want to hear them... thanks

I'm glad you got that fixed and it was nothing too serious! One ?, how did the mechanic know the EGR ports were clogged, b/c I'm assuming he'd ask you first before relocating IM stuff and yanking the plugs out! Just checking

its easy to find out if the ports are clogged.....esp for the mechanics.

Yeah, by pulling one of the plugs out right? Shouldn't they ask you first or do they not mind checking for you?

nope no need to pull the plugs.....by simply test driving it they can tell if the ports are clogged becuase below a certain rpm...i forget what rpm exactly becuase its been so long before i have cleaned a set of ports but the egr system only operates after certain rpms and if its not operating right itll bog and shit....its somewere like 2k-25oo rpms but i forget.

Oh, I really get it now! The EGR only functions at cruising speed (constant) and not under acceleration! That makes sense b/c sometimes I swear mine might be clogged, but that'll be soon when I check. Good info

the car has to be HOT and above 1800 rpms for the EGR to operate. if the egr is failing it causing rough running, wich is caused by clogged ports the more ports that are clogged the rougher it runs....when a port or ports are clogged that means more exhuast gas is going to the working unclogged ports...wich cuases them to have to much exhuast wich leads to misfiring.

Yeah, rear main seals do leak sometimes, its just part of old age. Another possibility is the distributor. When the distributor leaks (NOT the o-ring, but the housing itself) oil drips down to the same area between the engine/trans simulating a leaking rear main. Check this too. For the EGR ports, there is a much easier way to test for clogged ports than driving it, just disconnect the vacuum line to the EGR valve, connect a vacuum pump to it and with the engine running at idle pump it a few times. The engine should stall immediately on the first or second pump. If the engine doesn't do anything, or just runs rough but won't stall then it means the ports are clogged.

yeah, that's a good tip for checking the ports. when they called me, they guy told me that the tech "noticed" some mis-firing and that he recommended I get them cleaned. I actually bought all the replacement parts a couple years ago to just do it myself but never got around to it. I'm bringing the plugs and the o-rings up to them tonite and putting them in the night owl box so they can just do it for me tomorrow. for some reason, working on my car is the last thing i want to do now.

plus i have an 05 accord for a loaner and i don't want to give it back too quick anyways. but I really can't feel like VTEC like i thought i would be able to. my car seems to pick up just like this loaner does.

That's because the "i-vtec" is more linear than the old style vtec. Instead of vtec being "on or off" changing cam profiles at a specific RPM, the K motor's vtec is constantly advancing and retarding cam timing based on engine load, RPM, etc.
