sounds like a valve or valves might have blown or seized up which could cause the knocking noise and bad idle. i'd open the valve cover and check the valvetrain.

If you didnt have enough oil in it and were beating it up you could have bent a rod which will cause a knock. That's what I did to my last h22 in my coupe.

i still say check the valvetrain
i remember when i had my old a6 and i went from 5th to 2nd(was suppose to go to 4th) and over-revved and next thing i knew, knocking noise started coming from the head. opened it up the next day, and found out one of the adjuster nut that holds one of the valve springs was gone and the valve was loosely moving casuing all the noise.

i checked the valvetrain i think i need the valves adjusted cause when i touched them i could hear the sound its more of a clicking sound than a knocking

i dont have the proper tools to check the valve lash but i was apping the valves with a scrwdriver and thats when i could hear the noise like its not tight enough
