The only way to learn is to do it. You can try and read something about it, but you just gotta get a feel for it. No 2 cars are going to feel/grab the same. But the basic idea is let out on clutch, and push in on gas @ same pace, and keep the rpms at a constant to start.
This worked kinda good with someone else: See what rpm it idles @, and then while you slowly let out the clutch, press gas to keep the idle @ that number. Then you will be able to get it without stalling too many times.
Tips:
When you go to stop, press in clutch, and take it out of gear.
Whenever you are in neutral, you can let the clutch out.
Getting it going from a roll is the hardest part.
When you have to stop, worry about the brakes first, then you can take it out of gear.
Have fun, you will be hooked.

ok.. im gonna give u the tips i gave my gf .. when i started to teach her how to drive my accord..
1.start off by being able to let off the clutch without pressing the gas.. so that the car moves foward...
sounds easy right? but some people cant control their left leg as much as their right and tend to stall the car from this simple task...
once u can do this with ease.. over and over again..
2.begin transition...
do what i said in step 1 but add this to it
2a. as soon as u feel the car moving foward from step 1.. add a light amount of gas.. if you have driven a car before..(automatic) then im sure ur right foot nows how to be gentle in most cases..
add enough get so that when u disengage the clutch completely the car doesnt stall or jerk back and forth.. a good.. rpm to start learning how to do this is 2,000rpm..
3. rev the car to 2,000rpm and get a feel for were that is at then start to do 2a again.. until ur good at it..
3a. stopping.. for some reason this is the hardest part of learning how to drive a manual.. because u have to do alot at once..
after u did what i said from 1-3 ur gonna need to know how to stop.. so u dont fuck up ur nice new car..
this is the general way to stop...
1.engage the clutch and put the shifter into nuetral..
2.depress the clutch
3. brake as u would in an automatic.. w.e distance u feel comfortable with applying the brake do so.. BUT do the 1-2steps in anticipation to this..
after that is said and done u then have to start back up..
a good technique for beginners is this
when ur at a stoplight and have the brake pressed down nicely
give yourself a good distance from the car in front of you..
1.with the brake down engage the clutch and put the car into first.
2.gently slide out the clutch till u see the rpms drop from current idle..
3.DO NOT RELEASE THE CLUTCH PEDAL ENTIRELY just enough so u feel the car wants to go some were(slight vibration)
4.gently release the brake pedal.. if the car moves foward u accomplished what i wanted u to accomplish.
5. whenever the light turns green.. let off the brake.. the car will creep foward.. as the car in front of u begins to accelerate u begin to add gas. to your current clutch pedal level.. slowly release whats left of the clutch pedal..
sidenote:this is just a way to start off stopping for most newbies to manual trans. it helps because u dont have to fight that sweet spot in a rush.. u can find it while the light is red. thus taking away from u holding up traffic.
after a while this technique will no longer become needed. because driving stick will become a second instinct.
how to shift:
1.start off with the first steps mentioned.. getting the car going..(try this in a open area..or decently long street)
2.once u accomplish not stalling the car and its creeping foward
3.give it gas.
4.rev the car to a good rpm level(3,000rpm-4,000rpm)
5.engage the clutch as soon as your foot comes off the gas(basicly as one foot comes down the either comes up)
6.once the clutch is engaged pull the shifter down in nuetral.. and passed it pulling down to 2nd gear.
7.ull feel it into second gear.. ull feel it move in
8. slowly release the clutch without adding any gas..
9.the car will continue moving foward.. add gas as needed..
(repeat stoping techniques)
continue practicing going for first-2nd..
side tip: fist is the only gear u really have to be super gentle on.. when beginning to move.. once your out of first.. you dont have to let the clutch go out so slowly.
matter of fact i no longer worry about it..
just let it out as my foot pleases..
(ONLY AFTER 1ST GEAR)
practice going from 1st-2nd.. and in your driveway practice going through all gears.. with the car off
1-2
2-3
3-4
4-5
N-R
then.. when u feel u have enough practice take it to a public street or a different one you havent practiced on so u wont have the braking distances memorized ect
after u get a feel for the car.. start going to roads u know u can catch a few good stoplights on..
continue practice then head out to the highway.
side technique:
how to stop rolling backwards on an uneven road/bridge/turnpipe
1.as u come to a stop put the shifter into nuetral
2.brake as desired
3.as soon as ur braked applied the technique i said early about letting out the clutch till u feel the car wants to move foward..
with the brake still pressed..
4.well do just as mentioned above but depress the clutch a lil further so the car/motor feels like it wants to go more foward(more vibration)
5.slowly let out the clutch.. if the car moves foward..
6.press the brake again and apply more clutch
7.release the brake again till u find the sweet spot with the clutch so that the car doesnt roll back/go foward..
i hope i have helped somwhat..
but like mentioned
u gotta have seat time to really learnLast edited by WiKKeDV16; 01-12-2004, 01:28 AM.

Best way I think, get a friend that knows how & tell him to teach you in parking lot. Then, when you get better go to some small but steep hill & learn how to hold it at stand still, then take off....simulating you being stopped on a hill @ stop light & having to take off when light turns green (stick's nightmare!).
If you have to learn yourself. Go to a parking lot with plenty of space. Then, just stick it in 1st gear and practice stopping & taking off smoothly. Just keep doing it until you launch smoothly & get hang of it. Learn how to find the engagement point on clutch where you easy off it & the vehicle moves forward, while you have a little pressure on accelerator. Then, go to small hill and do the above I mentioned after you get a GOOD handle on 1st gear take offs.
Shifting into 2-5th gears are nothing...it's the above that people have trouble with when learning.

learn how to park car too.
come to a stop in parking spot. stick gear in neutral (in middle), turn car off. then put car in gear & lift up parking brake.
when you start car, first put it in neutral, then turn car on while having clutch & brake pressed in, release emergency brake and take off
this procedure will work when taking off while parked on hill or anywhere...never assume you'll be on flat surface

im confused. so you turn the car on with clustch and brake pushed down, realese parking brake, let of brake and clutch, give it some gas and go? then going from first to second, get off gas, press down clutch, shift to second, wait until you fell it shift, then let of the clutch and give it gas as your releasing the clutch, or do you give it gas after you release the clutchfor sale

2.ok..u wont feel the CAR shift ull feel the shifter slide into second gear.. when u get the car ull know what i mean.
3. u give it gas as ur releasing the clutch..
its a transition
as ur clutch foot comes up.. ur gas foot goes down..
equally proportioned so u dont over rev or stall
it takes some practice..
but usually as u let the clutch out.. u can rev the car to 2,000rpm and slide the clutch out.. no stalling.. no jerking... no over revving..

i agree u guys are good...the only thing i have to add is don't ride the clutch. What i mean by that is there are 4 pedals in the car, from ur right to ur left they go as follows: gas, brake, clutch, and dead pedal...when u are not shifting gears your left foot should be on the dead pedal...don't let me tell u that again son lol. Remember to not be intimidated when u stall out and also to keep ur composure when going into traffic for the first time. I taught my girl how to drive stick in about 1hour and 30 minutes and she drove her new 95 gst home from 200 miles away the day after but only because i taught her to not be intimidated.Knowledge is power...in EVERY sense of the word

My first car is my CB7...it's a stick. When I was looking for a car I wanted it to be a 5 speed. I've never driven a stick but I figured it couldn't be too hard. It was the 3rd car I've ever driven...period. A week before I drove my dads auto truck and my Moms auto Mustang. I'm 15 remember. So i was like...screw it...I'm gettin' a damn stick. Now, my Dad didn't know how to but was willing to learn and my Mom doesn't want any part of it. So we got the car over to my house courtesy of my grandpa and we took it from there. After a few trys it's fairly simple. You'll love it. Find a large open parking lot! Parking lots are your friends. After a few days it'll be completely natural.
