Well I just replaced my O2 sensor and my car feels like new again. Acceleration is back. Fuel mileage will probably be better. And I'm sure I'll pass emmisions now. I don't know what that problem is between those specific rev points that some of you are having. All I know is I should have done this a long time ago. Hopefully though, something else isn't off that will cause this new sensor to go bad quickly.

        Extremely Helpful

I just wanted to send my many thanks for the post on cleaning the EGR ports. I had nearly drove myself insane trying to correct the problem. I had done all the obvious like replacing spark plugs, wires, cap & rotor, ect. The hardest part was finding a slide hammer which I puchased at harbor frieght for $17. All the rest was easy in just following directions.
Just to pass along a few notes. The new caps are 15 cents a piece. Buy extras because they have a tendency to fall and be picked off by the gremlin to never be found again. The new ones are hollow unlike the orginals that are solid. They still work. The only caps that need to be removed are the four that are inline with the header. You can remove all (8) if you plan on doing a detailed cleaning.
It took me about a hour and half to complete. The two holes closesest to the EGR valve were clogged rock solid. Use the pick to detemine location of the hole then the drill bit and round wire brush to clear it.
I did have to adjust the idle after completion but you wouldnt believe the difference! The idle and acceleration is very smooth. Thanks again for your much welcomed help.

i hate to bump an old thread, but my 93 lx is having this exact same problem (stumbling between 1500-2000). im also getting horrible fuel economy.

there seems to be two different suggestions in this thread: get a new 02 sensor or clean the egr valves.

since my fuel economy is getting hammered, do you think the first step would be to replace the 02 sensor? i only ask because i am a little short on time (going on a road trip soon) and probably wont have a chance to do both. thanks.

Well, if you have the money, I'd do both, but try cleaning the EGR ports first, also remove the EGR valve itself and clean it as well. Then, if that doesn't cure your stumbling problem, a new O2 sensor is in order. I'm gonna have to try this myself in a week or so. I get bad stumbling right around 1500-2000, and my acceleration below 3500 is very bad. My fuel mileage is also on the low side, and since gas costs $1.059 per LITER up here, I need all the fuel mileage I can get.

i was searching on the web for how to clean the EGR valve and i stumbled across this:

                --------------------------
I just came home from Harvey's house and he told me since your dealiship
said your problem was due to blocked EGR passages that you should buy a
bottle of GM Kleens and pull off your EGR motor off the intake. Should be
two bolts and a weatherpack connector. Start the engine and slowly pour
the KLEENS down into the hole where the EGR motor was. A turkey baster or
some other gadget will help in getting the chemical to the hole. This hole
is directly connected to your EGR passages. Also he said to squirt some
into the hole with the engine off. Let sit for a few minutes then start
the engine. Any carbon deposits should be dissolved and burned away
harmlessly. If this is your problem then this should be the fix according
                to GM tech.
                --------------------------

do you guys think that would be a viable alternative to physically cleaning the ports? this seems like a quick 5 minute job (after the EGR is off), whereas physically cleaning the system will take a while.

                    Mine also started doing this.
                    Like about a week ago.
The distributor got replaced last weekend, and its still doing it.\
                    *sometimes* in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th you cant go past 2k-3kRPM

i tried doing the EGR line trick and its still doing it.

I also bought new spark plugs, also my 02 sensor is shot.

                    I get about 12-15 mpg.

                        Im leaning towards timing myself.

Will do that tomorrow, plus put the new Sparkplugs. Denso

                          TTT.

My mom's car is doing the EXACT same thing at the EXACT same speeds.

Any thoughts? I had talked to a few people and was leaning towards the distributor, but now that I read this, I'm not so sure...

The car's had plugs/wires/cat/rotor/egr cleaned recently. I don't know what else it could be, but it's bugging my mom.

I was thinking of cleaning out the IAC...but I don't know what else to really look at.

EDIT: It appears the EGR ports weren't cleaned...must have just been the valve...I'll have to take a look at it this weekend.

my car as well has been doing this... but something differenet has happened to. so my first question is ...
can ur egr or whatever velve get so cloged that ur car wont start. or the o2 sensor be that bad. or is it timing. there have been a few times where my car wont start for a few it will just turn over and thats it. then i wait and it starts up. so my question is could all 3 be part of the problem. see my car was running fine as i was driving listing to my music the check engin light comes on and well i was like ok o2 sensor np. well then the rpm just drop and go back up. then i could only get up to 3500 rpms and it would seem like there was a governor there. so i get to the nearest gas station look at then and noting idk. but there is oil leaking from the distributor seal so i get that replaced and the of course my car runs like crap still. like it would stutter right when i accell. so i was thinking new cap and rotor np. well new one goes on and wont start. old one on and wont srat. so i go and get a diff one from auto zone but no start. just turns over then there is like a pop sound so ya thats where im at. car wont start now. and no the wires on the cap ar correct i took off one at a time and put on one at a time in correct order.

no the egr ports don't have to do anything with your car not starting.....

                                do you get spark?
