    Car shaking/jerking in gear

just wanted to see if you guys had any suggestions on a fix for this current problem i'm trying to diagnose.

basically, the car will violently jerk whenever i'm in gear (any gear, any rpm) and trying to accelerate. to better describe it, it feels like right before you stall when you're first learning to drive a manual car.. that jerk. and to even BETTER describe it, i have a video of it happening: www.cb7tuner.com/problem.wmv

i can only think of a few parts that could cause this.. ECU, wiring, ignition, or transmission are the main ones. does anyone have more experience or insight on this?

Whats the condition of your Ignition system? If its fresh look for a bad connection somewhere.

the only parts that are brand new are the plugs, wires, and distributor cap. i checked for a bad connection, but everything looks good from what i can see.

I had the same syptoms before my igniter went bad. Really bad jerks, whenever it felt like doing it.

yeah, someone else told me the same thing. i've thought my distributor was going bad for a long time now, i just want to make sure before putting out more money.

shouldn't i get a CEL for something related to the ignition/distributor though? did you 92accordf20a?

i didn't get any CEL's, until the ingniter actually died. Then it gave me #15.

one more question.. how bad/often was it shaking right before it died?

How are your engine mounts? Are you hearing a bang each time the car jerks?

If it was engine mounts the engine would rock not the car.

My tranny used to jerk when changing gears. I added Lucas Tranny Addictive and it smoothed it out. Be warned tho, the stuff is thick as molasses. In the long run I don't know how well the tranny will run.

well i figured this problem out and thought i'd let you guys know. it was the distributor. i took it apart and found all of the internal parts to be corroded/rusty. so i cleaned it up a bit... sanded the metal parts/connections and took a flathead to clean between the teeth of that gear inside of it. i hear you can use some electrical spray too.. but i didn't. i still think i need to buy a new distributor, but at least this will hold me off for awhile.

this distributor is most likely what caused the other problem i was having a few weeks ago too with the engine cutting off... but messing with the wires somehow delayed it.

did it coused the engine to jerk at idle??while driving??? while accelerating???or did it do it between certain rpms?
was it when u went easy on the throttle or when u floor it?
i think i am having the same problem and i think its the distributor but on my car it does it when i go easy on the throttle and it only does it between 1500rpms and 2000rpms.....
i am about to try my rebuild distributor.
are we there yet are we there yet are we there yet

when it first started about a month ago, it only jerked at really high rpms.. right around redline. then it got worse, and started to do it at lower rpms whenever it wanted to. finally, i couldn't accelerate at all in any gear at any rpm without it happening. but it never happened at idle or when revving in neutral. try just cleaning out the distributor like i did.. it worked for me..

Mate, Also have a look at the Distributor Rotor Shaft for play in the upper bearing. The CB7 dizzy's are well known for it. My dizzy started to make a constant ticking sound. The upper bearing was flogged out and the 'interrupter cog's' were hitting the Internal Position Sensors. I made a temporary repair by replacing the upper bearing, but the damage was already done. I kept on getting a Code "9" No 1 Cyl Position Sensor and intermittent misfires. Sometimes it would cut out at lights and would take a while to restart. The big problem was that I couldn't get hold of any internal parts separate so I bit the bullet & imported a New Dizzy from RockAuto.com.
A Genuine Brand Spanker in Australia will set you back over $1100. Even a second hand one from a wreckers or a reco'd one will cost about $450.00. So it worked out cheaper for me to get a new one in from The States. The only difference was that I had to rewire it to suit the original internal coil.
I had to replace a customers distributor because of a complete bearing seizure/failure at high revs. He had to get it towed into my workshop. The whole inside of the dizzy was shattered.
