    Noisy Cooling Fan Motor

OK, I am finally getting off my butt and replacing a noisy cooling fan and want to verify which one it is I need. Now, the noise started last winter and would happen when the cooling fan comes on after the car is turned off. Once it started getting warmer out, the noise went away. Now that it is getting hot out again, I have started using the A/C and when it comes on I am getting a screaching noise from one of the fans. It will go away when the A/C is turned off. And it makes the noise, still, when the car gets turned off and the cooling fan comes on.

    So my questions are these:

    1) Which fan is on the passenger side (this is the one making noise): A/C or main cooling fan

    2) I want to replace it with a reliable part as I am selling the car soon and want it to be right when I sell it. Anyone ever seen a new one cheaper than $120? Would a local auto parts store carry one?

    3) Is it very hard to pull the assembly and just replace the motor?

    Any and all input appreciated.

    Thanks,

    1. the one on the driver's side is the a/c fan

    2. Ebay or a junkyard

    3. Its just 4 bolts and a plug or 2. Practically self explanatory how to take it off. Just look down there and see how its connected. The blade is probably coming off the motor or the motor is bad.

OK, I have found a couple of possible fan assemblies on ebay I am thinking of going with. Just need to verify if I need to 4 or 5 blade one. I have heard that one side runs the 4 blade and the other side runs the 5 blade. I know for sure it is the passenger side I need. Shoot, for the money of the ebay items, I could buy both and replace both for the price of just one new OEM motor only.

I had already checked local salvage yards and none around. I was also a little leary of getting a used one, but then again my car has 249,000 miles on original motor and fans and they are just now having a problem. But I would like to try and get something fairly new and reliable since that is how this car has always been taken care of and that is the way I want to have it when it goes up for sale.

So, I ended up ordering a cooling fan assembly from ebay and will replace that one first. That should take care of the fan on the passenger side that makes noise when it comes on and the car is turned off. Then I will go from there on the one that makes some noise when the A/C is on. If that one is still making noise, then I will replace that with one and still be out better than just buying 1 new OEM motor only.

              Mine does the same thing.
Question: does it make the noise when you slip the clutch?

No noises in regards to the clutch. This is purely cooling fan/ A/C condensor fan related. Besides, the car has a new clutch, pressure plate, flywheel, and TO bearing from last fall.

Well, I found and ordered a replacement cooling fan assembly on ebay last Friday and it was delivered today. Took it out of the box, inspected and looked just like the factory part only MUCH cleaner. Undid some bolts, disconnected the connecter from the old fan and wrestled it out of there. Then did a little finagalling to get the new one in, bolted everything back up and plugged it in.

Turned the car on and flipped the A/C on, both fans working and with no noises. Actually, there is a little noise and it is that of the new fan moving more air. I wonder if the other one was moving slower and being worn out was not moving the air it should. Never had a overheating problem with the car, but it might run even cooler now. Big test will be the next time I get the motor warmed up, turn the car off and that cooling fan comes on. That is when the noise was the worse.

Other than that, all is good again. Car is back in excellent working order. Just needs to be washed, waxed, vaccumed, repaint DIY grill, and put some shinny stuff on the interior and it will be ready for pictures and to go up for sale!!!
