    Timing questions

I did try searching, didn't find the answers I'm looking for. When adjusting the timing, there are three marks on my flywheel. The main white mark and a line about 2mm above and another 2mm below the white mark. What exactly is 15 degrees BTDC? The white mark or the line above or below? Right now I have it set at exactly the white mark, but I want to make sure I don't have timing set for TDC cuz then it would be too advanced, right?

You want the white mark in the v groove. If you have a advance timming light, dial in 15 degrees on the knob on back of the timming light and see the mark on the engine, it should be at zero. If not, loosen the three dist. bolts and turn the dist until the main mark is at 0 degrees. That is how I set the timming on my honda.

I just have a standard $20 timing light... it doesn't have any dials. The white mark is perfectly lined up in the groove and the engine seems to be running perfect now, I was just wondering if the white mark was 15 degrees BTDC. What do the other two marks mean then?

I think those are the plus or minus 2 degrees that honda allows for the timming.

I think those to lines are there just to confuse me...

Honda Engineer "Haha! We make 2 extra marks on flywheel to confuse silly round-eye!"

The red mark is 15 degrees advance, so you want to line it up with that. If you have an adjustable timing light and you set it at 15 advanced you should look for the white mark. But like I said, since you just have a standard non-adjustable light you need to line up the red mark.

There isn't a red mark. Its just the white one with two little engraved marks above and below it. The white mark I thought was TDC, because when I did my timing belt everything else was lined up the way it should be when that mark was lined up...

Yes the white mark is TDC, but you want the ignition timing 15 degrees before TDC. There should be a red colored mark (this is 15 degrees BTDC) surrounded by two other marks and then there is the white mark up all by itself. You want to time the light with the red mark.

god i wish i had a digital camera. I've seen pictures of exactly what your saying mrhonda and thats why i'm asking cuz mine doesnt look like that. It looks just like this (probably about this close together too):

                    -
                    -- <----white mark
                    -

the mark above and below the white mark are just engraved... no color. Its weird.

hmmm...you sure you don't see any other marks? Best thing to do then is to try to get ahold of an adjustable timing light, set it to 15 BTDC, set it at the white mark and be done with it.
