When you park on an incline, its best to pull the e-brake up enough where it makes a reasonable effort to hold the car without the transmission. That "click" that you hear when the car rolls a bit after parking is the sound of the parking pawl engaging in the transmission. It's completely normal, but understand what's taking place... That little #14 in the illustration above is now holding the entire car's weight with the two front wheels. Will it break? No. BUT, what does happen is the transmission locks the front wheels. Then the stress from locking the wheels is then transferred to the driveshafts, which transfer it to the transmission then to the engine block and finally.. the engine mounts. Its now equivilant to a constant hard accelleration all those components; esp. the mounts... couple that with some years of heat and you have broken front and rear mounts.

Pop your hood, park on an incline and watch your engine move when you let go of the brake and you'll see what I mean.

Car towed on the front wheels

Lets say you parked your car in a store lot too long and the cops or whoever are sent to tow your car. Worst case, there is a car in front you, so the only way to tow the car is to lift the rear wheels and pull the car out and then d tow it the right way. If the car is pulled with the front wheels on the ground, those front tires better lock up (expecially for an auto tranny). What do they do about the e-brake if its set?

Tow truck drivers dont care about other peoples property.

they drag it onto a flatbed. really bad on your tranny and engine mounts, not to mention the flat spots it makes in your tires.

Remember this: If you do tow an automatic with the front wheels on the ground, you MUST start the car... shift it into D, then into N. You cant just stick a key in the interlock bypass and throw it into Neutral.

It's related to the torque converter and the fluid transfer inside the transmission. I knew someone with a '94 EX who had it repo'd. They threw it in Neutral without starting it so they wouldn't wake the owner up; and towed it from the rear. They ruined the transmission and she had to have it replaced. Honda says that if the engine cannot be started, it must be flatbed towed.

Sometimes I start the car and put it from Park to Nuetral to roll out of my parking spot which has an incline. Then after a full stop, I put it in D4. This wont cause any damage right ?, I have been doing this for a couple years.

I know Honda recommends their special towing procedure if the car cannot be towed with the front wheels off the ground, but this is only a last resort and is speed limited.

As long as you are performing step 1...

                1. Start the engine.
                2. From P you slide it into N and roll down for a short distance
                3. When you completely stop, you put it into D4.

...then it won't hurt anything. TECHNICALLY, you should be putting it into D4/D3 before doing that; but that's trivial. What would cause damage would be going in reverse... at a rapid rate of speed... for a long period of time.

As far as towing, that procedure isn't a "last resort." It's a must if you're towing an Auto with its front wheels on the ground. Honda says not to exceed 50 Mph, but I think that is more of a liability/safety issue, not a mechanical limit.

One thing i just thought of. If you're one of those people who sometimes shift into D4 or D3 while your car is still moving backwards...shame on you! But more importantly, DO NOT miss the D gears and slip it into 2. If you ever have, then you understand why. 2 in our cars acts very differently than the other forward gears. There is no give in 2 when going backwards. If you're ever on an uphill incline, do this. Stop with the car in D4 or D3 and let off the brake. If the hill is steep enough, the car will slowly begin rolling back down the hill. Stop the car and shift the car into 2 and let off the brake again. In 2, the transmission will not allow the car to roll backwards at all.

What I meant was towing the car on the front wheels should only be done if a flatbed tow truck is not available. Personally, I would never tow it with the front wheels on the ground, I wouldl pay more for a flatbed in that case.

Another issue which is important is the need to make complete stops when changing from R to D4 and vice versa. The only time this rule is violated is when my car is taken for service because those mechanics never make full stops and I hate seeing them do it. Even the Honda owners manual says "Severe transmission damage may occur".

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one.Yesterday my girl(bitch) Threw my car(AUTOMATIC 91 se) into park and turned off the key(ignition) doing 75mph down the highway. It took me a few seconds to realize i had to put my foot on the brake to get it out off park and back into drive, but I had to start the car first. I started the car IN P doing about 60mph and went back into drive. Well, needless to say I locked up brakes and kicked the bitch out and blasted off foot to the floor.I beat on her(the car) pretty hard for a mile when I tried to turn around in the middle of the highway. I went into reverse and GREEEEEEERRRRR no reverse nothing but grinding. Had to have a few people stop and push me back on the road.

All forward gears work, it's just grinding in reverse and no movement. When I go from reverse to park it still grinds in park, just not as load(and the grinding is loud in reverse). If I go from D to P there is no grinding. It all happened so quick she may have thrown it in reverse then I put it in park. I was so pissed I don't remember. I'm still pissed. Is my tranny fucked or what? Please help.

                      Fucking cunt ass bitch!

You, sir, are fucked. Automatics have a lock to prevent them from going from D4 to P, don't they? Mine does... It won't let me go into R, P, 2, or 1 from D3 or D4. Last year it had a problem where it would let me shift into all the gears without pressing the button. All I did was take the shifter apart, clean the moving parts, and then grease all the parts, now it works fine. I think everyone else with an auto should do the same.

My car goes through all the gears no matter what, all u have to do is push the button. or have your foot on the brake and the ignition on to get it out of P.

It has a lock to prevent going into park but if you hit the shifter hard enough it will force it into park. Ive done it before not the greatest thing on earth. Plus some dude in my brakes class 5 semesters ago did it lol good stuff.

Beleive me, I already thought about that. I want to take the cheapest route though, Which may be a 5 speed if I can find all the parts. A remanufactured tranny on ebay is near $1500. It looks like I can get a used one for around $500 shipped.

I just went for a drive and decided to see what happens if I put it in reverse going 55mph, It does'nt do anything, it's just like neutral(I had to push the button to get it go into reverse). I guess I'm going to have to watch where I park for a while, seeing that i can't back up.

I found out this chick is bi-polar. Now half the shit in my house is broke and my car is near totaled. All I did is said some girl is cute. Watch out for those ones fellas.
