Oil Light Flashes Only During Startup

Oil light flashes for less than a second during startup. A longer flash when the engine is cold. I routinely check the oil, it has never dropped below the lower mark. It does not burn oil, but a leak is present around the valve cover gasket. Currenly due for an oil change (last change 5000 miles ago).

Possible dirty oil filter or oil pump issue?

180K and oil light never has flashed during while driving (knock on wood!)

check the oil pressure sensor it has a fairly small hole in it and can get clogged with sludge over time. its located right by the oil filter.

you said it looked like oil was coming from the valve cover? it could be the cam seal or the o-ring on the distributor. that was one of the many things i had to fix when i bought my cb7.
