    oil mystery

i checked my oil level right now and it is a bit higher than the "full" lvel on the dip stick. i just did a recent oil change and all the oil that came out was around 1.5 quarts. so i filled it all back up and that was when the oil leak, shown in my sig occured.

and the oil pan (not the one attached to the car but the pan i put to catch the dripping oil) shows black oil, kinda slush-ish. which is wierd because i just changed the oil. would the level be because the car has sat and all the oil has gone to the bottom?

Define slushish. Whats the weight of your oil? Synthetic or standard? Exactly how many miles do you have on the new oil? This will help us answer you a little more accurately...

And you drained new oil after most of it leaked out?? Or is the level *higher* after a lot of it leaked out?? I'm a little confused.

So far it sounds to me like you just overfilled your oil. Did you ever find the leak?

      my bad...
i meant that the oil was a bit thicker than liek brand new oil. which is odd because i just changed it and didnt even run the car (less than a mile before the car pooped out on me) and it turns out black.
      1990 Honda Accord EX, f22A4...219k
10w-30...regular oil. used valvoline high mileage.

when my car started to stall, i decided to replace the main relay, plugs, plug wires, oil change (that is when only 1.5quarts came out)
i also had the fuel filter, o2 sensor, PCV valve, ignitor changed.

so maybe the reason why there is a oil leak (i believe it is the rear main seal) is because there is too much oil?

How long did your car sit before you drained the old oil? If it was still a hot engine a lot could have still been coating the inside of your engine, and when new stuff went in, it just mixed with the old stuff. Even still thats a little strange, because it'd have to be like 2 qts of old stuff mixed with the new to make it that dark and thick.

If you had a bad oil pan gasket overfilling it would cause the leak from just sitting there, otherwise I don't think any other seals would leak without having run the engine.

Are you sure its the rear main leaking? It could be your distributor leaking and running down the backside of the engine... its a tricky one. I had the same problem.

well, currently i have the distributor pulled out and there were no visible leaks from that.

i just checked the oil level again right now and it is at 80% so i dont know what is up, lol
