    oil cooler o ring fix

    hey guys ! ,

so my oil cooler is leaking. i have part number 91316-PE7-730 coming in either tomorrow or monday and it looks like it is a rubber gasket .

i removed the oil cooler today and to my surprise NO RUBBER GASKET . this has me worried . do you guys think the oil cooler has a metal gasket instead? or the idiots who swapped in this engine didnt put one in .

Does the o-ring seat into the oil cooler itself or is it just sandwhiched between the cooler and the block? i dont seem to see anywhere it will sit in .

    BTW i have a h23a blue top vtec .

Thanks for all your help in advance!

There is a nut on the threaded part of the cooler that the filter screws onto. Remove that and you'll see.

The oil cooler is the same part number used on some F22A6 engines. The seal is an o-ring that fits into a groove on the block side of the cooler. The old one is probably completely flat (called 'compression set') from heat/age so it probably doesn't look like an o-ring. Clean off the cooler, the seal should be there otherwise you would have oil all over the place.

@F22CHRIS- yes i removed the 30mm nut , used a breaker bar and it wasnt too hard.

@fleetw00d - im almost positive there was not anything rubber on the block side of the cooler . i could be wrong though . i felt around with my finger and it seemed like it was all metal . i will double check in the morning just in case. ill see if i can find a tiny screw driver to pry off anything there.

when i emptied the oil from the engine, there was only about 1.5-2 qts that came out. this had me very worried . i dont know how bad the leak was and i drove the car about 40 miles home when i bought her 2 weeks ago.

i am assuming that having the front of the car jacked up , will not cause the oil to collect in the back of the engine and cause it to not come out . This car i purchased has been sitting for months , so the oil could also have sludged up in the engine . i guess we will see tomorrow morning .

I'm sure with some light you will see that the o-ring is there, but as I said, it will be flat now because of heat/age - I've been there, just did one on my 93 SE coupe.

Jacking the front up will not cause oil to come out of the cooler opening; you'd almost have to stand the car on the rear bumper to do that.

If you put 4 quarts in and the oil level is at the full mark, then you probably don't have a significant amount of sludge, at least in the pan. You can look in the oil filler port on the valve cover to see if anything appears to be accumulated on the rockers and what you can see of the top of the head.
