    New AT swap shifting hard

My beater mobile in my signature CB7 Coupe 1990 had a bad transmission. When you would put it into D4 it would go no where, you would have to start off into 1st them make my way up to D4.

Anyways I took my sedan's AT and put it into the coupe. The transmission had sat at a buddies for over a year. After putting it in I bought the Honda AT Fluid ATF DW-1. I put 5 1/2 quarts into it, basically until it was good on the dipstick. Well anyway when I'm driving and the car is shifting up, it's smooth while accelerating. When I let off the accelerator the car will shift again to throw it into lower rpm range while driving, but it shifts hard when I let all the way off the accelerator. If I let off the accelerator a little bit, it wont shift as hard as it does as letting off all the way. I'm not sure if I'm running into a issue here, I hope not at least. I know this transmission was good before I swapped my sedan to a MT. I know mileage doesn't matter but if you are curios the new transmission has 124,000 on it.

I know my CB9, which is mint shifts a little hard but not as bad as this one does. I guess I'm so used to driving stick, and haven't really driven my CB9 to really know how the car is supposed to shift.

Mine shifted hard like you are talking about when I swapped my transmission. What helped me is changing the fluid after 1,000 miles than again at 2,500.

You need some lube guard from the parts store with your fluid. If you are running a 90-93 auto it takes oem dextron 2. Which isn't made anymore. Lube guard is a friction modifier and will help as well.

OK so here's what I have experienced with automatic transmissions on a cb7. My 90 210k miles has shifted hard since I've owned it 178,000! Even after changing the fluid it's helped it a bit but it still shifts hard. The 93 10th anniversary edition shifts smooth 174,000 and the 93 SE shifts buttery smooth! with 174,000 Can barely feel it shift at all it just all depends on the car I guess and how well maintained the automatic transmission was through-out it's life. But you could potentially have a problem with the transmission itself though. One more car i'll put in is a family members 93 EX it shifts a bit hard too with 190,000 on it.

Mine is having the same problem, check your transmission solenoid. you can check on youtube on how to check those things. i'm saving some cash to replace mine with OEM one's.

            hope this helps..

I read that some where, that it could be the solenoids. I'm going to change the fluid here soon, if it's still shifting hard my next try was the solenoids.

I also have no error codes when using the jumper.

I'm not sure if it would cause this issue, but it's worth it to crack open the TCU, which is bolted to the plate in the passenger footwell next to the ECU. It's common for resistors to burn out and capacitors to leak. If you can solder, Radio Shack carries replacement components for pennies. Resistors (light-brown peanut-shaped things with colored stripes) are color-coded, and capacitors (black cylinders) are labeled.

Cheaper and easier than buying a new TCU. I think I might have a spare TCU, but I don't know where it would be at.
