    F22B DOHC & H23A1 Parts Compatibility

I have a JDM F22B DOHC head. I got it with the valve cover smashed in on the cam gear side. The valve cover is smashed into the cam gears and the intake cam gear is actually broke off.

I have to go about fixing it myself so for the sake of both availability and cost I was wondering and hoping the H23A1 cam gears and valve covers are the same as F22B DOHC.

Also, does anyone think anything else might be damaged? I'm a somewhat experienced engine re-builder however I have never had this happen before. I looked over the head and everything else appears to be ok. But enough stress on the cam gear to break it off makes me wonder about other things...

You could use a runout gauge to determine if the end of the camshaft was actually bent. It may be enough that you don't realize it. However, I doubt that it would be. The cam gears are weak cast material and likely took the brunt of the impact alone.

For the valve cover you can use the standard H23A1 cover. It's the same thing, including the gaskets. For the cam gears, you'll need to get F22B DOHC parts so that you can put yourself back to the same starting position that everyone else is in with the headswap, or, you can get all H23A components. You'd need the cam gears, water pump, lower timing gear and timing belt.

      Thanks Jarrett.

I figured the H23A1 VC was the same. Under this heat advisory the JY that has a couple H23A1's happens to be closed so I'm unable go and check.

F22B DOHC cam gears seem to be impossible to find. I will have to go H23A1 components. And I'm glad I have that option! This has been a shitty and stressful deal but that bit of info is a real relief.

      Just to clarify:

      H23A1 cam gears
      H23A1 water pump
      H23A1 lower timing gear
      H23A1 timing belt

      Correct?

I'm also going to throw in some H23A1 cams both for added performance and since I don't want to trust the intake cam that's in it currently.

Anything to encourage technical discussion and progress around here.

And the H23A1 camshaft is actually a VERY slight upgrade over the F22B DOHC camshaft, so it's not an entirely bad thing that you're having to spend the money to replace it, if that's what you choose to do.

What should I do about timing covers? F22A lower with H23A1 upper?

I have decided I'm going with AEM cam gears since I have to get it tuned anyways might as well get the most out of it. So I will be modifying the valve cover and the upper timing cover if it will fit so adjustments can be made.

It looks like the H23A1 upper timing cover will fit the F22Ax lower timing cover...
