    Valve seal change

I am burning some oil and so far all of the symptoms point to the valve seals.

So my dilema is that i don't want to remove my head. I have read up on other people doing it with the head on the car and it seems pretty straight forward.

My question is has anyone on here done it before? if so, any tips or insight you can offer?

yes ive done it in a day.

take the rocker arm assembly off

start with whatever cylinder you want

take spark plugs out and stick a long screwdriver or something straight down into the cylinder and make the cylinder you are working on TDC that way the valves dont fall all the way down.

i used a spark plug socket with a magnet inside and a hammer to hit the top of the valve retainers/spring; it all pops off and the retainers stay inside the socket attatched to the magnet make sure you keep downward pressure while doing this

pull the old valve seals off with pliers theyre on there tough.

slide the new one on and using a 10mm deep well socket, tap them down into place you will know when they are seated

no too heard of a job just tedious and you work with tiny retainers dont lose those

I've done it a few times. An assortment of pliers helps. Angle needle nose helped a lot. I filled the cylinder with nylon rope and didn't worry about the valve dropping. Obviously start on each cylinder at TDC. I prefer a wooden dowel vs screwdriver to know when you are at TDC. It only takes a nick yo make a hot spot to burn a hole in a piston.

For the money I think a valve spring tool is worth it. So much easier than playing the odds that the magnet will catch that tiny ass retainer. Those bitch's are hard to find if not impossible if you loose one.

Be extra sure to plug every single oil return hole in the head, do that first thing once the rocker ass'y is off! Keep track of all the keepers, you wouldn't want those falling all the way down into the oil pan or somewhere else. I used an air hold fitting set from Napa, it allowed me to hook my air comp's hose directly into the spark plug hole. The air pressure holds the valves up. So, on the fitting one end is M14x1.5 male (just like a spark plug) and the other end is 1/4" NPT female (for the air comp. hose). I haven't tried the rope trick but it works.

                  sounds great

I might have to try this cause I'm having some heavy smoking issues upon cold initial start up. Man I can smoke my drive way up. I'm about to price the valve seal and cover gasket kit and make a post about my issues.
