Have you inspected the VSS connector on the harness? You want to make sure the pins are are sticking up at the right length, and that there is no corrosion on the pins. If there is corrosion, I recommend splicing on a new connector. I just went thru this, I tried 3 VSS's before deciding to check the plug. It was corroded and after replacing, it's working perfectly.

On a side note about the VSS throwing a code, mine would only throw a code if I was testing for it, and the CEL would come on ONLY after a prolonged (5 second or so) in gear decel.

Have you ever done a cluster conversion?
It requires a lot a soldering skill and patience and research. I know because I did a BB6 conversion. Took me the better part of a week after work and then I could never get the high beam indicator to work. Eventually I sold it in the classifieds.

I would look for a stock one.
