Is it bad for an auto trans to shift to Neutral and coast for a bit then put it back into D4?

As long as you're not "neutral dropping", it's not terrible... but there's very little reason to do it. You won't really save much gas by doing it, and honestly... that'd be the only reason to even try it.
At best, you might see a slight mpg increase if you're doing it on every hill... and you might also cause increased wear... an expense that would easily outweigh the potential savings.

I wouldnt chance it. I have done it and it dont feel right. It doesn't bang but its somewhat harsh.
As far as coasting for mpg reasons I have heard that if you leave it in gear and let off the gas entirely when going down a hill that the injectors dont spray any fuel. If you put it in neutral and coast down the hill the injectors will continue to spray fuel to keep the engine running at idle.
I dont know if this is true but Im sure someone here does.
