How to fix broken cig lighter

My cig lighter doesn't work at all and I dunno how to fix it. No fuses are blown and the circular light is not lit up. Please help.

They tend to simply fail. I've seen plenty of people simply replace the whole unit with success. I've never attempted to disassemble it, so I don't know what can fail...

Are you talking about the actual lighter piece or the piece you stick it in?
If it's the piece you stick it into, it's only a 12v wire, and a ground and the metal thing. If it's the actual lighter piece that gets hot, just buy one for a few bucks at autozone or ebay...

Its the socket that is broken, I want to use it for a car adapter and cannot do so.

How do you fix it? the circle does light up but very dimly.

Pull it out. Should be 2 wires, as Amiss said. 12v power, and ground. If there's enough wire to cut some off, then cut the wire as close to the socket as possible, and remove the socket. Replacements can be found at any parts store, I believe. Then just solder on a new socket, and you're good to go!

The light up ring has nothing to do with the lighter itself actually, its part of the interior lighting circuit

What deev said, it could be the original wires it was connected to that are no longer working for whatever reason, or they could have just knocked loose or something. If the wires arent working you can easily tap into a different 12v like for the stereo or whatever

I did not find any fuses to be blown. I took it apart and re-soldered the connection, but its still not working. I even tested it with a voltmeter and it did not register anything. It had continuity (ohms) though. Here's a video of what it looks like,

Don't worry about the ohms. Can you put your volt meter directly on those terminals you have connected to the cig lighter? You should get a DC volt reading. After this you are looking into the wiring and I think there's a cig lighter relay (according to the manual, there is, fuse 11). Also check if the wires were cut in the past as well.

Does your glove box light work?

I already tested the volt meter on the terminals and did not get anything, the wires looked in good condition. I checked fuse 11 and it appeared good.

Yes the glove light works, however non of the interior lights work now because I dropped on of the big fuses under the hood *doh*

I'll get a pic of the big fuse and post it here, I don't know where to find a replacement though.

And can you check Fuse 22 under the hood as well?

If it was me, I would run a new 16AWG wire (maybe 18, I need to know the load and distance) from battery (+) through in-line fuse, that is located as close as to (+), to a cig socket and find a ground source in where I want to have the socket.

If I wanted a stitch, I will have a lighted switch next to the socket.

                        Be done.

Not too much more to troubleshoot. Looking at the electrical schematic there are simply two fuses for the cigarette lighter and relay (#11 and #22). From these fuses direct lines run to the cig relay, then a WHT-RED wire to the cig lighter. The ground coming from the cig lighter is shared with the glove box light.

Question, does the Ashtray light work or the ring around the cig lighter unit?

I found the solution! After I re-welded the connection it blew a fuse and when I replaced it, wala, both the interior lights and the cig lighter worked!

It was just a fuse that blew out. Thank God it was so simple.

Thanks for all your help guys, bless you.
