How do you correctly torque down torque plate bolts

I was able to do this with my old torque plate but I want to know what the proper method is. what I did was stick a screwdriver in one of the holes on the plate.

What's the right way to torque this down without turning the engine over?

    EDIT:

I found out that the correct name for that is a "flex plate", but I do think "torque plate" fits the description good enough.

Their is a tool you need to stick in the end of the crank pulley, and it (along with you and preferably a 1/2 inch breaker bar) holds the engine while you torque them down.
