    5w-30 vs. 10w-30

My original f22a4 just passed 236,000, but she does use some oil between oil changes. No leaks occur and no blue smoke comes out, so I'm sure it's just rings starting to wear down.

Will running 10w-30 help the oil consumption or damage anything should I decide to use it?

    Thanks!

After its up to temp there both the same oil, one is more suited for winter than the other. You could try a 10w40 or something but I'm not sure it would help with your problem.

Alright, it sounds like running a slightly heavier weight oil won't really make much of a difference.

yeah my DD has 263k miles and I just put the regular 5w30 in, it uses maybe .5 quart per 5000 miles. Still get excellent mileage too about 30mpg mixed average

its about the viscosity, colder climates use thinner oil cause its colder and has less strain on the engine and all that when colder, warmer climates the oil isnt has solid and ya, also for older cars if you use thicker oil it can help slow oil leaks not completely though but it helps.

              This.

Using oil is normal at that mileage. Just keep it filled. If you want to see how your motor is doing, start doing Used Oil Analysis (UAE) testing to keep an eye on trends, that will tell you more about your motor than straight oil consumption.

Wouldn't hurt to do a compression/leakdown test to give you a gauge of the motor's true health.

Thanks guys! Sounds like the general consensus is to just keep using 5w-30.

I may use about a quart between oil changes and given the high mileage the motor has, this seems to be normal.
