If you have the radiator full and radiator cap off with car running and it never sucks down and gets that hot I would start with testing the thermostat(google how) or remove it all together and see if the coolant circulates without it.

Something else you could try temporarily is to uninstall the thermostat and run the car. That way the coolant flow will not be restricted at all. If you still have overheating problems then your next bet is the water pump before moving on. did you try replacing the TEMP SENSOR located under the distributor??? i have had a problem with my old CB where teh temp gauge just went up and in the end it was just a bad sensor
