How do You go about inspecting a engine?

My friend gave me a f22b2, he got it from a junk yard. The head is off of it and I was wondering what to look for before I drop the money and time into installing it.
the cylinders have hone marks and you can see that copper stuff for head gaskets was used on it so I think it was rebuilt at some paint in time.
The pistons have alot of gunk on them like it was running rich.
How do I go about checking it out, like the rod bearings and everything? Do I need to take the cap off and look at the bearings or can I just try shaking them?

The "gunk" is carbon build up it's 100% normal.

LOL at shaking them if they have that much play in the clearances you are in trouble.

Yes you will have to take the rod cap's off inspect the journal's on both the crank and cap's aswell as the condition of the bearings. Then check bearing clearances and do NOT miss match the rod cap's or bearings.

Idk if I want to that. Wont there be other tell tail signs if something like that happened like metal flakes in the oil.

Are f22 vtec head bolts the same as non vtec ones?

If you wanna half ass it then start "Shaking", if you want to do it right to insure that everything is A ok it takes a bit of time and know how. Good luck.

the only real good way to check and see if everything is in good order is to pull it apart and use a micrometer.Check if everything is in spec and there are no visible score, scratches, or pitting going on.
