    Erratic idle at cold start???

Hey everyone, so my motor is currently pulled, and I'm doin a mild na build. So I had a problem before I pulled it though. Right when winter began to cool things off, I noticed that my car was hesitating to start in the morning. It got worse quick, to where the car would barely even run until it warmed up, then the problem was gone.. upon pulling the motor, I realized that my short ram had holes in it from vibration on the brake control module thing . Also the Plenum and runners were filthy with and oily substance that was coming through the holes in the intake... so I'm wondering if the erratic idle thing is from some kind of sensor or valve on the intake manny that is dirty, clogged or ruined from all the crap that got in there.

I just wanna make sure the problem isn't there anymore when I put it all back together.
    Thanks!

    what motor?

fitv maybe it adjusts idle due to temperature

I have the a6. I was wondering about the Fitv... I noticed the block off plates they sale, and was wondering if blocking that off will mess with smogability. What exactly does the fitv do?

Its the fit let the car warm up or in your case people have placed the fitv in some boiling water. Get the water to boil then drop the fitv in one it is warm take it out unscrew the two screws on top and tighten the vavle inside it the close it and problem solved I had to do it last week but mine was still on the car.

The FITV allows additional air into the plenum (downstream of the throttle plate) to increase the idle speed when the endine coolant is cold. Coolant is routed to the bottom of the FITV; as the coolant warms up a thermowax plunger closes the valve so that idle is controlled only by the idle screw and idle air control valve (IAC). Blocking it off shouldn't affect smog operation, it is only in play for the first few minutes of running after a cold start; however, blocking it off may result in problems with staying running after a cold start (I've got mine blocked off to see if it is causing my surging idle).

As all_accord said, the FITV can be adjusted. With the coolant at operating temperature (I suggest shutting the engine off), take the top cover off the FITV and adjust the yellow valve seat. Most likely it has backed off over time; use a flat bladed screw driver to turn it down snug, then put the cover back on. If it is tight, back it out until it turns easily, then snug it back down. Then put the cover back on. Ideally, the cover o-ring should be replaced. Adjusting it tigher than necessary (tightening down when engine is cool) tends to reduce the fast idle speed when engine is cold.
