Disclaimer: I don't have abs and am not totally up on the system
However, the first thing I would check is the ABS circuit fuse. If it's not in or it has blown, the system won't work in most makes of car.
I am GUESSING that the ABS light flips on mainly if there is a problem with your wheel speed sensors.
If that is true, then if the fuse is not the problem then it might be an accumulator that isn't pressurizing fluid. Because that would affect all wheels at once, whereas the system that alternates the hydraulic pressure between low and high for ABS braking, if it failed, would probably not fail on all wheels at once. PROBABLY.
how's that for uncertainty? pretty much just thinking out loud. OH OK I'M PULLING MY MANUAL OUT NOW!
welll.... it's certainly an involved system. I think you'll need to pull the Helm out yourself and look at the diagnostic chart.
A few things that jump out from a quick glance: 1) if when you start the car the ABS light comes on until the car key snaps back to RUN mode, then turns off, then the problem isn't a simple burned out ABS indicator bulb (which bulb IS possible to burn out) and you probably don't have a diagnostic code stored in the ABS system.
1.2 ) check the ABS system/components and all junctions for any fluid leaks, and check the brake fluid reservoir level (you knew that).
1.5) if you have a leak in the ABS hydraulic system (accumulator and high pressure hoses) and air gets into the hydraulics, there may be inadequate hydraulic pressure to augment/close the calipers, even though the pulsers at each wheel are working-- likely creating the very situation you are describing.
and 2) check your underhood ABS control box fuse.
and 3) don't use anything but a digital multimeter on the system (probably to protect the electronics).Last edited by batever; 07-25-2011, 04:29 AM.
