Bouncing Tach after 3k RPM?!?! help please

my car had a slight random stutter so i checked my rotor and plugs just to make sure everything was ok... and it was. but after i put everything back, my car started twitching out badly. in any gear as soon as i hit 3000rpm the tach would jump around all over the place, but the rpm gauge on my vafc still read correctly. but i also noticed that if i drove past 3k it would start to stutter... and it would get worse the higher i went and harder i pushed it. is all that connected somehow??? did i accidentally mess with something when i was checking my cap/rotor?

i was getting my system checked at kragens and the battery was full... and the alt. was charging normally, so its not that. usually when i had twichty gauges it was cause the alt broke and i was running low on power.

    whats goin on???

sounds like your distributor. I had the same problem a while ago on the other car. It would kinda flutter around, and the engine would act like its misfiring. It would eventually make a poping sound if you kept on it. I originally thought it was a clogged cat or something, but a new distributor solved the problem.

lol, i thought it was just my tach because my car does that also whenever i go over 3k but i dont have any problems when going that far.

Hold up. first off get yourself a haynes manual or something similar. Now go to where it says how to test your coil. get a voltmeter and see if it comes within specs. I had the same symptoms, it would be fine when you were just driving granny, but as soon as you got on the gas, after 3k the tach would go crazy start going to like 9k(even though it really wasnt) and engine hesitating badly.

its a small electrical device coverd in a small metal box inside the distributor under the bottom, unsure of what it does.

What makes me laugh about forums, is that no matter how much you try to help someone, they dont take the advice. Go ahead and do it the hard way.

You got to respect what you drive, and appreciate what you have, making the best of what you got. and if that means putting CAI, HID's, a phat stereo system, and a idiot in the drivers seat...then so be it!
