    Replace a windshield myself?

My windshield has a crack in it now, thanks to falling ice from a neighbors roof. It's not a terrible crack yet, but bad enough that it will need to be replaced.

I called a few local places and one said $300 and another $275 which seems pretty expensive considering I had a windshield replaced on a 98 Ranger truck I used to drive at work for $175.

Anyway, how hard would it be (and would it be worth doing) to get a junkyard windshield and replace it myself?

I paid about 225 for my new one, I watched the guy do it, it seemed pretty easy but...
      1. He had all the tools he needed
      2. People that are good at something always make it look easy.

If you want to do it go for it.

on the stairs, she grabs my arm, says whats up,
where you been, is something wrong?
i try to just smile, and say everything’s fine.

leave it to the professionals, unless you have the tools and know-how to do something like this.

Absolutely leave it to the pros!! They have special ways to handle the glass, set it in, special adhesives, etc. IF they do it right, it won't leak. I had a junkyard piece put in an Accord years ago by a pro, and it leaked at first (they corrected it). It sucks to have a leaky windshield, even it is just a trickle! Don't be cheap on this one and try to save $50. Get a new one installed professionally and make sure all the trim pieces, moldings, etc. get back where they belong. I believe it technically takes 2 people to install one windshield properly.

Thanks for all of the replies - and thanks for the bat to the side of the head to remind me this isn't something I want/can/am able to do myself. I can't imagine trying to handle the windshield without those clever little suction cups (though if I gad those I could climb skyscrapers).

I don't have comprehensive on my car anymore because my CB7 is less of a show car than a daily driver.

Some places will let you bring your own window. Call around.

When I had a leak in one of my car's windshield, I called several places. Several said they could't do it. One said to call another place because they could give me a better deal. I called that place and they said they could probably do it for free. That same place hooked me up like 10 years ago fixing a door window. I paid the guy with a beer.

Make the junkyard pop the windshield. If it breaks, it is their problem.

I would highly recommend Safelite. They did a rear window for me when my car was broken into.

I called about the windshield a while ago and they quoted me $156 for the entire job.

They're nationwide, so they should be in your area.

That's who I used for the Ranger windshield and it was, like you said, right around $165.

I didn't see them in the phonebook around here though...I'll check out their website.

Yeah so they want $328 for the windshield replacement and asked for my zip code.

Do you guys know if they quote based on the value of homes in your area? I rent an apartment in the very nicest part of the city (like $10M homes on either side of me), and I know some other companies (Starbucks and Blockbuster) do quote based on zip codes, so I'm curious whether I should call back and tell them a ghetto zip code and see what they say

Hey, that's crap, $328 is a rip. If it is indeed based on your ZIP, call them back with another ZIP and see.

Well I had the place that was $211 do the replacement and there's a reason they were so cheap. All the trim on the windshield looks like crap now, but the glass is new and clear and not cracked. I guess that 'll have to do.
