    quick themostat question...

    here's the deal.

    I was running the car without a thermostat for a while (mostly because my temp gauge wasn't working and that's how i bought the car.) and the car seemed to be fine, just ran a bit cold if anything.

    I fugured out the problem fixed temp gauge and ran the car like that for another week and like I said it ran a bit cold if anything.

    So Today I got a new thermostat installed it made sure everything was connected and that the thermostat was functional. Everything seemed good.

    Untill I took it out for a drive. Now it's running hot it's like it'll bounce from 1/2 to 3/4 of the gauge from Cold to Hot.

    My question is what could cause this?

    what could go wrong with running the car without the thermostat?

      Bleed das coolant system sir.
      (I.E. youre seeing air passing your cts)

        the engine will run cold without a thermostat. the water wont stay in the block till the engine reaches operational temperature. The point of a thermostat is to keep water from going into the radiator until the water temp reaches around 200 degrees. Running the engine without the thermostat will cause carbon buildup and sludge up the oil.

          and is bleeding the coolant something I can do my self or is there special tools required?

            Ok without the tstat this is where the temp sits and it does not move ever.
            Is that a normal position for running without a tstat?

            when I put the tstat in the tamp will fluctuate between the two red dots never goes above that but sometimes it dips below.

            any input?

            I saw a video on how to bleed the system so I'll reinstall the tstat and bleed and see what happens.

            wish me luck.

            Edit: Also (with the tstat in place) the car does not have to be in motion for the temp to go down when I give it gas. It's like the higher rpms help the tstat open up and reduce the temp.

              When you install the thermostat make sure the bleed
              hole is facing straight up ( the little jiggly thing in the thermostat )

              after you fill it up with antifreeze leave the cap off and start the car. Turn the heater on heat and on high. Run the engine for about 10 minutes. Don't wory if coolant spills out but have a jug of water and keep topping the radiator off. Let it run until the top and bottom hoses are both hot and its blowing hot inside the car. After it is, cap the radiator and drive it. Gauge should stay pretty steady. If it still fluctuates you might have other issues such as a clogged radiator, or maybe even a sticky t-stat.

              Did you get a OE Honda t-stat or aftermarket one by chance?

              Make sure the jiggy thing is facing straight up.

                theres a factory air bleeder on the t-stat housing. its a 12mm bolt with a little end sticking out of it. open it up just a little and let it run for a bit then close it back.

                  The needle does not have a set spot where it always sits

                  all that matters is that it picks a spot and stays at it

                  all temperature sensors have slightly different resistance which makes the gauge sit slightly different

                  My accord sits above half
                  My brothers accord sits at half
                  joshy's accord sits below half

                  All cars are running perfectly fine and stock

                    also make sure your cooling fans are operating correctly, My gauge would fluctuate: when I was at a light it would rise and when I was moving it would go lower until I fixed the cooling fan relays which allowed the fans to kick on using the Thermo sensors

                      yeah the stock bleeder valve looks and works fine. I haven't tried what red07frontier suggested but I should have enough time tomorrow or even today if it doesn't get dark before i get home. I tried just undoing the bleeder till it was just pouring coolant and closed it but it didn't help much.

                      The Tstat is after market but looks identical to OEM. Murray Plus is the brand.

                      and thanks tippey that does help. I wouldn't be bothered if it was anywhere close to half but what it's doing right now is scary.

                      thanks guys I'll update tomorrow to see if any changes occur.
