auto tranny stalls then stops engine

would this be true for the automatic tranns to?

    Symptom:

Motor starts up and runs fine, but when you put tranny into any gear, it will not drive the car. At this point, the more you rev the motor, the more noise it makes. The noise sounds like very bad rod knock, rapid clack clack clack sound. When you put tranny into neutral and push the clutch in/out, it will sometimes make the noise then releasing clutch pedal.

    Cause:

One of the CV shaft joints has completely failed and no longer drives that wheel, in two pieces basically. The noise you hear is the rotation of the good part of the shaft attached to the tranny banging against the other parts on the damaged joint. The reason the car does not drive is because it is an open/standard differential, so all torque is going to the slipping/non-driving wheel due to differentiation.

    Price:

$55-65 for remanufactured CV shaft. Add labor if you have to pay a shop to replace it.
i'm experiencing the same symptoms. first thing i notice was the sport light was on. so i took it as the tcu was acting up, like it always does when the outside temps get warmer. car started fine. once put in gear the rpm drop, then eventually the engine stops.

checked for codes. solid S and check engine light was on also. trans fluid seems fine after checking it.

    thanks

No, a broken cv joint is not your problem. Those two problems aren't even close to the same. They don't even sound the same. The problem you quote says the engine continues running and makes noise when you put it into gear, not that it forces the car to stall out.

Are you experienceing any clanging noises under the hood when you put it in gear? Or does it just sit there and slowly choke itself to death?

it does both. i changed the tcu and it seems to be running fine now. i wasn't aware that the tcu would do more then just put the car into limp mode

Is it still making the clanging noise? And I can't imagine the TCU being able to bog the engine enough to stall out. Apparently, no one else has an idea either.

no. it runs fine now. there was a clanging and metal on metal sound like the gears were trying to mesh. wish i would of made a small vid. but i was thinking the worse happened (trans went out) and wanted to get it fixed.

opened the old tcu and the capacitor that starts to leak was toast. the worse one i've seen.
