    Failed smog.. help me out

    So I failed smog the other day.. its a 92 accord ex 5speed.. everything was fine as far as CO & HC's.. the problem I had was with NOX.. @ 15mph it failed by 200 points and @ 25 mph it failed by almost 500 points.. the smog guy said he thought it might b the cat since it is an old car.. so my dumb ass replaced it and it turns out my reedings worsened.. the car didn't even pass the pretest after I put in the new cat.. has anyone had problems like this b4?

    A little background.. I just recently replaced the dist cap, plug wires from honda, ngk spark plugs, air filter, oil and filter, pcv valve..

    I haven't checked the timing yet but I will tomorrow.. also I ran seafoam thru the intake mani on Monday so I could clear up any carbon build up.. also ran some of it thru the gas tank.. not sure if that will help @ all with the high nox or not.. any advice is greeatly apreciated thx

    egr ports, egr valve, check egr solenoid. go back to the smog tech and ask for his money to pay for a false suggestion. most smog techs dont know shit.

      Wouldn't I have a CEL if anything was wrong with the egr as far as solenoid or the egr itself?..
      I really don't have time to tap out the plugs to clean the egr ports.. I don't even own a drill lol.. is there anything else I can do that might help clean out the ports?

      Also do you think that's why my nox levels were so high? It couldn't of been anything else?

        nope, do work son. it happened to mine and i went to the CAP (California assistance program) and a shop did my egr ports for states money and i passed.

          Replaced the cat

          my question to you first off is what exactly did you replace the stock almost 1000 dollar cat with. If you say ebay or anything similar you have the reason why your numbers got worse.

          As for the NOX, pull a plug and see what they look like, if they appear white overheated, then check your timing, and if it is right, retard it a degree or two, this could increase your co2 and carbon, but should reduce the NOX

              150 bucks isn't bad, the cheaper cats (not the cheap cats) work with a ceramic instead of metal to do the converting, the advantage is that it is much cheaper, the disadvantage is that it will not last nearly as long. Expect to need a new one to pass in a few years.

                    @15mph:: HC: max=81, Meas=20
                    CO: max=0.74, Meas=0.01
                    NOX: max=554, Meas=596

                    @25mph: HC: MAX=63, MEAS= 19
                    CO: MAX=0.62 MEAS=0.01
                    NOX: MAX=511 MEAS=985

                              you cant retard it all the way, it is 15 plus or minus 2 degrees. 2 degrees can give you a little bit of a change but not much.

                              If you really want to avoid cleaning the egr ports, run street legal 100 octane and have the smog tech put a fan in front of the car. seafoam will help with carbon buildup but in the end you still need to clean the egr ports.
