    C/V replacement ?

    I have a 92 lx 5 speed and I am in need of new c/v's. I have purchased them new from Rock Auto and I am hoping this is a job I can do myself. Just a few questions before I start this.

    Will I be able to do this without any air tools ?

    Should I replace the ball-joints as well(they are only 6 months old)?

    Besides the ball-joint separator is there any special tools I will need ?

    Sorry if these are super-noob questions, I just don't have a second car right now so I want to be sure I have everything I will need before I start taking things apart. Thanks for any help.

    You will not need air tools as long as you can take off the axle nut. If the ball joints were replace 6 months ago, keep them that way. There's no sense in wasting money. Tools I use to do a cv axle replacement would be:
    jack
    breaker bar
    extension for the breaker bar
    32mm, (IIRC) axle nut socket
    set or metric wrenches (since I don't remember what the tie rod and ball joint sizes are)
    deadblow
    Sig removed due to excessive size.

      36mm nut socket. axles are easy. hardest thing is getting the balljoints back in place and the nuts back on.

            you wont lose any if the vehicle is jacked up on both sides, if its only jacked up on the passenger side when you do that shaft, you will lose a bit of fluid.

              The automatics will not lose fluid. But the 5 speeds will. This is because the fluid level is higher on 5 speeds and with the axle hole being lower than the fill hole (which is also the full line), some will pour out if you remove the axle without draining first.

                To not lose that much fluid, just jack up the side you want to do and take that CV out of that corresponding side. When the car's in the air like that, the fluid, w/ the aid of gravity will not flow out of the side you're taking the CV out of.

                Before you try to remove the 36mm axle nut, I'd hit it w/ a spray of PB blaster if they've been in there for a lengthy amount of time, I broke a 1/2" 24" breaker bar by adding a 3ft pipe onto it lol.

                  On the 5spd you only need to worry about losing fluid on the passenger side, like stated above make sure that side of the car is higher on that side to minimize this fluid loss
