Starts and dies, starts and dies.

Ok my 90 would start and die, start and die about 8 times then it started upo and ran for about 15 miles. Then star and die. Just goes vroom 1 quick time and dead. I have:
    1. Ohm tested the main relay by manual specs and it should be good.
    2. Replaced the fuel pump from not being able to hear it.
    3. Replaced dizzy with new one cuz the wires inside were cracked up good.
    4. Replaced fuel pressure regulator with JY part.
    5. Checked everything the manual says to check for this problem except alternator cuz I don't see how it would affect this with a fully charged battery.
    6. Replaced fuel filter.
I have spark and fuel. Does this with the air tube on or off. I am stumped and really need to get my ride rolling again.

    Any help really appreciated

    Thanks

did you check the main relay completely? ie: the solder joints? sometimes they could be in contact and other times they could not be touching. I would resolder all of them if you can.

Also, just before your car died, did the tach jump at all? if it did, that could be a sign of a bad ignitor.

        thats all i got lol.

Looked at the soldered connections on the main relay and they looked OK but will take it out and re flow the connections tomorrow. The new dizzy is a complete unit so igniter, coil etc... are all new.

Finally found the problem. Called Honda and spoke to the service manager. Told him the problem and what I had done and he said to check the ignition switch. Problem solved. It's a damn shame that Haynes goes to the trouble to write a troubleshooting section and doesn't include this under the problem I was having among the several things it does tell you to check. Oh well I'm rollin again and thats what matters.

              Thanks to all that answered.

I have been having the same damn problem the last 2 months and have changed everything out except the fuel pump. i can be driving and it cuts off. I can hear my pump cut on at least. wed3k told me about the ignition switch and to jiggle my key around and it still didnt shut off. if it worked for you then I will give that a shot.

BTW was it the ignition starter switch like this?

That's the one JTEK24. If you have a haynes manual it has the procedure on how to Ohm out the switch for continuity so you can at least rule that out good or bad. If not here it is. Mine is a 90 LX but this should be the same.

Get a volt meter and set it to Ohm's

There's a plug in the fuse box that has 5 wires coming from it, pull it from the box and ohm these out in this order.

Turn key to first position and test White/black to White.

Turn key to second position which is where it rests while running.
                  Test White/black to Yellow.

Turn key to start and test White to Black/white.

If you have continuity the switch is good. Mine was shorted out between the White/black and the Yellow wires. There is also a procedure to test the Main Relay in the Haynes manual but this post is long enough. If you don't have a manual PM me and I'll gladly look it up and send it to you. My car wouldn't even run so if yours is running and then dying you may need to check the main relay too. Lots of posts on here about how the soldering on them sucks and can cause problems. I've been through everything but the PCM trying to figure mine out so if I can help PM me.

Hope this helps and good luck.
