Did i get sold a fucked up tranny

ok so i bought a p2a5 tranny local for 150 guy said it was in good condition.

just got it in yesterday and took it for a drive.

tried going from first to second at high rpm and wouldnt shift just sat and continued to grind. i let the rpms drop quite a bit and it would shift..

well i took it back to my parents and tried looking at it.. didnt see anything wrong and took it for a drive again.. when backing up (with it in reverse) it would buck and ide hear a lot of "clanking"..

i took it for a spin again and now it completely refused to shift to second gear at all.

any ideas or should i just cut my losses on this one.. if i cant fix it im just going to sell the car all together.

unfortunetely im not getting any responses suggesting an easy fix im already out 150 bux now, im looking to be getting a new job that requires driving a little distance to work and i cant afford to not have a vehicle. I have a child on the way and just cant afford to do this shit anymore.. looks like ill be selling and getting out of the game for a bit.

oh an i also live in an apartment and dont have access to a garage on a regular basis so i cant just work on my car as i please. FML

Thats why I always have my junk rebuilt or buy from a reputable dealer. OR unless I knew the person personally and I drove the car the motor/trans was in before I bought it.

when i first start the car it wont go into any gear at all until i pump the clutch then itll go into gear, if i put it in 2nd at a dead stop and let off clutch pedal itll just grind no matter how hard i try to pull it into gear or hold it there. could this possible be a hydraulic problem.. (master cylinder?)

It sounds like you have air in the hydraulics. A sure and easy way to eliminate it being the slave or master cylinders, is replacing both. Be sure to replace all the fluid and get all the air out. Air likes to get trapped at the dampener located on the passengers side wheel well above the tranny.

Diagnose and fix the problem, rather than continuing to damage the tranny. It may be clutch hydraulics related. Taking the time to fix this will be cheaper than your other options, so try it.

All you other options (unless you network & get a deal from someone) are going to be more expensive at this point.

Think everything through before making impulsive decisions. Otherwise it may lead you into more trouble.

Might be your shifter cables too. When mine broke I could shift into 1/3/5 fine but 2/4 were no go

It's a used $150 transmission... things go wrong. Synchronizers are very common things to wear out in these transmissions.

Did you put the proper amount of fluid in it? What fluid did you use? Synthetic Honda MTF or GM Synchromesh work much better than motor oil, which many people suggest to use. I've even had a shop put gear oil in my transmission (a BAD thing... that's the last time I trusted my car to a shop...)

The P2A5 is from the F22B2, correct? Does that just bolt on as an F22A transmission would, or does it need to be modified, such as when doing an H22 swap? (I should know this for certain, but I don't... but if it needs a new hole to be tapped, and you didn't do so, that could create issues.)

Depending on what he's done with it, you really can't say it's the seller's fault.

For all we know, he put the wrong fluid in, and mounted it incorrectly.
OR, it worked fine when the seller removed it, years ago... and things dried out. Upon being used again, they weren't quite the same.
