5k is whats usually thrown around but some companies will say more. I think mobil-1 has one that says like every 15k? Id say 5k is pretty safe for FULL synthetic oil. Of course depending on your driving.

I've always used Castrol GTX 5w30

and with the blackness it's most likely your filter because when i first bought my car i used a fram filter or something from walmart the oil was black and dirty so i went with an OEM filter same oil and the oil is still clean.

so now i always use Castrol GTX 5w30 with an OEM oil filter which only cost couple bucks more then the fram.

i change right before the 3k mi. mark.

Yes my name is Dang, Don't use in vain

But with the new oils out today, name brand oils (castrol and valvoline are the only two non-synthetics I recommend), you COULD go 5000 miles for every oil and filter change...MUST do both. However some engines (such as toyota's old sienna and camry sludge campaign engines) need every 3000. This is of course with easy driving...if you drive like me in the environment i drive in (dust and dirty country) you'll want to go with 3-4000...so...3000-5000...depending. Can't give you more definite then that...3-5000

If you are using FULL synthetic you can go upwards of 15,000 miles (12-17k depending on oil, engine, and driving conditions) for oil changes, that is also with changing the filter only and topping off the oil every 5000.

But again...the only way you'll know is with an analysis...but conventional oil is a waste of money for what you don't get compared to synthetic...and there are no negative effects when switching to synthetics...gotta watch it though...some name brand synthetics aren't actually fully synthetic.

if you drive in the city often and if you get stuck in traffic often then you should change ur oil every 2k to 2500 miles....if you use synthetic then you should hange it every 5k or 6k tops.....

ps i use valvoline.... filter buy it at honda dealer....

Your piston rings are probably shot.

In general, oil change interval is highly dependent on the combination of that engine's health, environment and how it is driven.

A healthy engine driven "normally" in the average U.S. environment is fine at 5K mile oil changes for mostly city driving and 7K for mostly HWY.

Intervals less than the above are because a factor has changed (i.e. engine health degradation, extreme environment or driven harder than normal).

If your oil turns dark in color very quickly, your piston rings are most likely shot. This will require more frequent oil changes, as the oil will become mixed with fuel, in order to protect the engine. You have to make the decision to continue this routine, change engine or fix the original. This condition will consume oil as well and burn oil out exhaust while driving.

my oil turns black after about 1000 miles... i dont think its bad considering the engine has around 270k on it ... now my civic had 180k... and the oil turned black after 200 miles and burned a qt every 500 miles LOL also had a nice smoke show. accord only smokes up in the redline which it rarely goes to lol
