Terrible engine noise, possibly cam shaft?

My engine has just started making a terrible whining sound, which at first, it just sounded like squeaky belts, but as I listened closer, it sounded more like the sound was coming from the camshaft... I've attached a video of it so you can hear the sound for yourself.
This just started today... about two hours ago... as far as I can tell.
I just changed my oil about three days ago, I used Mobil 1 5W-30 high mileage instead of regular 5W-30 this time...

please help. I need this car to get me to DC on tuesday.

take your upper timing cover off and inspect the belt. It sounds like something's either rubbing or you could maybe have a loose pulley.

how exactly would I be able to tell if a pulley is loose?

I ran into that same problem, dont be fooled and spend over a few grand to get it fixed.


Its gotta be your water pump.

Mines made noises like that too, but it didnt leak, so i thought it was internal bearings, but it turned out to be a bad water pump.

Pull off the valve cover and inspect the tightness of the belt.

Im sure of it that its the water pump thats goign out (literally) and the wobbling of the pulley is making the noises.

OKAY...
so i finally got a look at it in the sunlight and it's definitely a loose pulley.
and I'd post up a picture, but I didn't get a chance to and I really need to fix this tomorrow.

It's the pulley thats the furthest down and fore most towards the front of the car.
which pulley is that and would I be okay to just torque it back in to place?

i think it`s the water pump .. but i`m not sure ,i would look in the book,or,auto parts store should have a pic of it

so which one is it brother? dependant on your answer is what you can do to fix it.

sounds like a water pump or idler pulley

wow i have that same issue and it happen after replacing water pump/timing belt and delete of the balancer shaft it does the whining noise on bettwen 2000 and 3000 rpm a mechanic told it could be the timing cover but its been doing it for like 3 weeks!!! i don't know what to do....

AC Compressor? Outer most towards the front (if visible without removing timing cover) then its the AC compressor.

Unless its your crank pulley you are talking about.

If not, then its the front balance shaft

I really feel bad about getting back to this so late... but it was the bottom most harmonic balancer. the one that ran the crank shaft and alternator I believe... It's also called the crank shaft pulley...

luckily my friend had been doing a clutch replacement on his 'lude earlier that week... so he was able to help me out with a giant breaker bar and that hex tool to get the crank bolt off with... fairly easy fix all in all... took about two hours with two people... thanks for all of your help though guys!
