    Need HELP with EGR Ports

i have concluded that my egr ports on my 92 ex need to be cleaned. i have also found some instructions on how to clean them, but i really haven't found great instructions or any pictures. anything will be appreciated. by the way, i just found and joined this site. it is the best i've found yet.
    thanks in advance.

some people use a drill, but thats not safe for me....it says it in my helms manual....yet they take u through a series of steps to locate the clogged egr ports then tell you how to go about cleaning them or just change the main EGR valve.

most of the time all the lines but one will be clean...do you have a helms?

o and how u know that ur EGR ports are dirty?
What makes me laugh about forums, is that no matter how much you try to help someone, they dont take the advice. Go ahead and do it the hard way.

You got to respect what you drive, and appreciate what you have, making the best of what you got. and if that means putting CAI, HID's, a phat stereo system, and a idiot in the drivers seat...then so be it!

i do have the factory manual. i know they are dirty because it stubbles on acceleration between 1500-2000 rpm's. i disconnected the egr valve and it goes away, but the engine light comes on. i have researched this in depth and found that this is a common problem on 90-93 accords. i have decided to remove the intake manifold completely and give it the cleaning of its life. i figure if this last another 130,000 miles, it is worth the time. thanks for the reply.

I think you have that backwards. When you start feeling the telltale hesitation from the EGR ports, all except one will be BLOCKED, thus sending all of the recycled gas to one cylinder, and preventing it from firing. We very rarely replace EGR valves, it's usually just the ports, and if you are bothering to clean one, then clean them all. Don't mess with trying to figure out the culprit, you'll spend more time than you need to.

kabuki's right. the egr valve rarely goes bad, plus it is easy to test with a vacuum pump if you think it's bad. the only way to find out which ports are clogged which is usually most of them is to open the intake. you can either drill into the cap, but you have to be careful not to get metal shavings into intake, or you can remove the intake and really clean it. this way you guarantee you are not getting a bunch of junk into the engine. i thought i might be able to get away with going thru the caps, but in the long run i think removing the intake is better, if you have the time and patience, which i don't have right now, so i will use my other car until then. peace.

To go off on a slight tangent, how would an EGR block-off plate affect things? I know what it DOES, but would a block-off plate throw a CEL, would it affect the blocked ports, ie would you still need to clean out the blocked ports or would the hesitation go away, and so on...

Thanks, and we go through the caps and use the $0.25 plugs that honda designed for them. It just depends on if it's been done in the past, but usually on virgin caps we drill a hole most of the way through, screw in a bolt, and pull out the cap.

It would stop the problem from happening, but it will throw a code on most models. It also will not allow you to pass an emissions test.

Here is the info you will need to do this. I found it on a web site that has gone away, but I posted it in my web space for all to see because it helped me to do what your trying to accomplish. Just make sure that you have Acrobat Reader to view it. You should, if not it's on the web for free everywhere.

                      later2u,
thanks for that link, that is exactly the one i was looking for, but like you said the site was gone. i have a question, though, if you don't remove the intake, and clean it as shown in the instructions, doesn't all the carbon get sucked back into the engine? and if so, does this cause any problems?

No, it won't hurt the engine. Just scape off the build up and wash it down with carb cleaner and you should be good to go. The plugs will be the cheapest part you ever get from the dealer and this will save you big dollars doing it yourself. Good luck, let us know how you make out.

well i finally cleaned the egr ports. it was a pain in the ass. they were very difficult to drill. i think some of the shavings and part of some of the plugs fell into the ports. i did my best to clean everything out. so far it runs great, but i kind of wish i would have just taken it to the shop. thanks for all the tips.
