My RPM's go crazy

my car struggles to turn on, but when i press the pedal for the gas it wants to turn on and eventually it turns on. after when im riding my RPM's start to go up and down and when it goes down, my car wants to shut off. then when the RPM's go to zero feels like the car is off but then it turns right back on. this only happens when its in gear. I put it on neutral then when i step on the gas it acts fine. so if anybody can help me out, please do because everybody tells me different parts of the engine. so I'm wondering if the engine is still good.

I had similar symptoms when my alternator died. I was in line to get emissions and my tach started fluctuating a lot going up and down then to zero. A few minutes later my car just died. Check the battery and alternator and all connections (i.e. positive and ground wires). Thats probably your problem.
