failed smog in socal-new cat, EGR ports cleaned

1st time i smogged didnt do anything to the car at all and failed with nox at 2800

2nd time i smogged i swaped to the h23 intake manifold and throttle body
let me mechanic drill my egr port for me, he said he only needed to do the one on the very end and then used a clothes hanger to clean out the carbon build up. then used compressed air and carb cleaner to clean out the path from the one end to the other. reduced nox to about 2200

3rd time i smogged i got a new 3 way catalytic converter and reduced nox to about 1000, max allowed is 799. im SO close to passing, only about 200 off the allowed amount

things that i have not done yet:
change sparkplugs, distributor cap, rotor, pcv valve, oil change, clean AEM dryflow air filter, and seafoam
all of these things are due for a change, but would they affect my emissions?
    car was warmed up everytime

cant tell you nothing wihtout you showing all your numbers man.
What makes me laugh about forums, is that no matter how much you try to help someone, they dont take the advice. Go ahead and do it the hard way.

You got to respect what you drive, and appreciate what you have, making the best of what you got. and if that means putting CAI, HID's, a phat stereo system, and a idiot in the drivers seat...then so be it!

doesnt help, have to see the other numbers to tell you what the issue is.

even after a port cleaning i was still at 500. when you apply vacuum to the egr it should die immediately.

if it is not egr related then the car could be running lean.

the guy at the smog station did the vacuume test and said the EGR is bad, BUT my mechanic did his own test and said my EGR is fully functional
my mechanic used to do smog since he was 18, and only stopped recently
what he showed me was that: with the engine on, press in the diaphragm and engine stalls. it wouldn't stall before the EGR was cleaned, but after the cleaning it stalled. meaning that its working
the 2nd test we did was put the car in drive, hold down the brake and press the gas pedal to like 2k rpm, then the other person used a mirror to see if the diaphragm on the EGR opened, which it did

would a tune up, oil change, clean air filter, and seafoam job reduce my nox emissions?

your egr valve can open but maybe it doesnt flow.

Post your other numbers. That will for sure tell the whole story.

can be as easy as a vacum leak after the o2, or too lean or wrong pcv

iono about the whole cleaning only 1 egr port, most members clean them all and all past smog well below that 799 mark.

                    ur 02 is at 1.7?

do you have an exhaust leak after the o2 sensor?

how did it compare to the other tests befor you put in the new CAT?

acutally you need co and o2 (slightly lower) to reduce nox in the CAT.

what is your timming set at? looks lean.

                        but some more info:
                        things i havent done yet-
seafoam, oil change, tuneup, pcv valve, fuel filter, air filter cleaning
havent checked for an exhaust leak

heavy carbon buildup will absorb fuel and cause a lean condition. The timing should be on the smog papers but will be skewed if the smog technician didnt jump the service check connector.

dont worry about the exhaust leak.

but dude check the timming, what did they test it at?

to me though it looks lean, if you look at HC there is only 7ppm.

To reduce HC emmisions and co it requires the use of oxygen, oxygen is highest in the exhaust when the mixture is lean.

but to reduce NOX the converter needs CO and o2 levels to be low. if not then NOx doesnt oxidize.

also them new cats suck at filtering shit. usually they lack in killin nox.

true story, the oem cat on my civic passed with flying colors but it just needed to be warmed up off idle for about 10 minutes.
