i read somewhere online that if your car requires 87 and you put 91, it doesnt burn as well and that will affect emissions.
during my smog check, my car was on 91 octane...
    can someone verify?

that may work, since it takes more btu's to actually burn 91 octane then you have less cylinder pressures

i forgot whqt it was, dentured alcahol or something will drop it dramatically.

but it depends on many other things. I think u can retard the timming a little bit to lower nox, but in turn co2 will go up sligtly due to not being combusted. you still ahve to stay in spec which i think is 15 btdc +- 2, so i think u can bring it down to 1 BTDC

you responding to every single thread in regards to base timing is starting to get annoying. real talk.

you aint going to fail nox for having your idle off. this is purely based off the egr setup. D series engines dont even have an egr, i wish our's was like that.

regardless the NOx emmision will still be there, it will actually be harder to control and you would have to make sure everything else is in working order for the cat to oxidize co and hc's to reduce the nox.

2nd time i smogged i swaped to the h23 intake manifold and throttle body
let me mechanic drill my egr port for me, he said he only needed to do the one on the very end and then used a clothes hanger to clean out the carbon build up. then used compressed air and carb cleaner to clean out the path from the one end to the other. reduced nox to about 2200

3rd time i smogged i got a new 3 way catalytic converter and reduced nox to about 1000, max allowed is 799. im SO close to passing, only about 200 off the allowed amount

things that i have not done yet:
change sparkplugs, distributor cap, rotor, pcv valve, oil change, clean AEM dryflow air filter, and seafoam
all of these things are due for a change, but would they affect my emissions?
                    car was warmed up everytime
i had the same problem i had to clean the egr and replace wires, spark plugs and a new
o2 senser and it passed fine with mine cus i had hi knox to as well idk if this helps but i tried

I just thought about it. If your o2 sensor is biased rich then thats why your car is running lean. causing lean combustion resulting in less hc's and more nox.

yea...unfortauntely the o2 sensors like to fail lean = close to no voltage.

alright so to update you guys, i finally passed today and what i have done was:
new pcv valve, cleaned aem dryflow filter, new fuel filter, changed oil, and seafoamed twice
for the seafoam, didnt use any into the gas tank, about 3/4 of the bottle went through the pcv valve (not all at once), and some of it went into the motor oil for like a day or two before i changed my oil.
numbers are still sorta high, but enough to pass
NOx was at 764, max allowed is 799 <<<15mph
the 25 mph was way better, at 102 of the 738 allowed.

That seems like a fairly long time to leave it in your oil. Either way, glad to hear you passed.

Also good to see that other than the cat, you didn't have to spend a whole lot.

good thing you passed. But i think he should of looked at the egr ports more closly, either that or you are still running a bit lean.
