    Bad Temp. sending unit?

Need a little insight on whether my thermostat is bad, or the temp. sending unit.

So I drove the CB from Boise to Portland a few days ago, and the temp. gauge was pegged up to the H half the time. When it first went up there, I pulled over and checked out the motor. No steaming, nothing. I waited a few, then opened up the radiator cap and it was full. I took back off, and after about 20 or so miles the gauge dropped back to normal for about a hundred miles then shot back up. I checked it all out again, and everything seemed fine.

I was able to drive about 200 miles with the motor supposedly "overheating". Can these sensors be checked for proper resistance levels to determine if they are bad?

I have no coolant leaks, but whenever the engine is "warmed up", it reads as it being overheated.

    Any info is greatly appreciated.

unplug the one wire sensor and see if it drops past Cold. otherwise it seems like a shorted sensor.

WOW what do you know, I was going to post the exact same thread about my CB7, the exact same thing happened to me. I had the car for two years and 40,000miles, ever since I have the accord the temperature gauge was always at 1/3 from the bottom of the first line. Last night i was driving on the hwy and i noticed the tem gauge clime to a little bit higher from the middle of the gauge, first i freaked out thinking the engine was overheating, i set the heater on high to pull as much heat as possible from the engine, the needle dropped to the usual point. I know the car was not overheating, I know it has coolant in it, because I check my fluids once a week, due to the fact that I have to add oil, yea I have bad oil rings, so once I add oil I check all my fluids, tranny, break, coolant, power steering, it has become a habit of mine, so I knew that the car had coolant. When i got home i let the car idle and after a few min the fans came one, but the temp gauge never moved again! No leaks, no smells, no steam????

Well here are my questions to add:
      1. What is the correct way to check the sensors?
      2. Which sensor is actually the temp. sending unit?
      3. Could it be a bad thermostat? I have replaced mine about 12,000 miles ago when I did a complete coolant flush?
      4. Is there a way to check if the water pump is going out?

      Thanks!

If coolant temp sending unit is working properly and wiring is unplugged, it will drop to cold by default.

Therefore, your issue is most likely coolant temp sender unit related, so replace it.

I had this happen to me on my 91 EX, cheap part. It was not in reality overheating either.
