How did you get the socket stuck? It's not hard to do just act as if you're changing your timing belt. Yeah your engine can do with out it the are plenty of members that have done this mod and have had no issues.

I have done this mod on almost every engine swap I have done... there is nothing bad about doing it ... just the damn vibrations... because that is what the balance shafts are for and nothing else... they are there because grandma complained of feeling vibrations so the engineers put those in. You gain a little power because of less rotating mass but its really not that noticeable. If you can deal with the vibrations than just do it. if you don't like it then you have the option of just putting the belt back on.

What if you just cut the belt in half? You could do that and leave everything else the way it is couldn't you?

LOL. I'm dumb, but not that dumb. No I meant literally cut the belt and pull it out. I haven't ever had my engine taken apart other than changing the oil and valve cover gasket so I wasn't sure how the F is made. I didn't know if would need to do anything else. I guess i'm going to take a knife to it then lol.

You can cut the balance shaft belt, IF your adjuster nut is FULLY tightened.

Sorry to bring back an old thread but I have a delimma. My car has a vabration and I replaced both timing belts. I have all new mounts also. I know when I replaced the belts (timing) I did not line up the balance shaft with the mark shown on the diagram earlier in the thread. I lined up the crank,cam...etc. Could it be that the vibration is because the shaft is out of sync with teh crank? The car runs great and is smooth at about 1200+rpm. Sitting at idle tho its a little rough. It kinda feels like (vroooooommmmmmm thud mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm thud mmmmmmmmmmmmmm.) lmao. Its not constant. I know ill get reamed for my discription of the sound. There is no sound or knock from the motor during this so its not a rod.

                    thanks for reading my rambling.

sounds like you have a problem with your fast idle valve more than anything.

Hmmmm...ill check into it. I did turn my idle speed up using teh proper idle speed setting thread on here. lol I had set it at teh 600-650 but it was to rough. I turned it up to 800 and plugged the IACV back in and reset etc etc....I does better. I pulled the FITV off and cleaned it but it did not help thats why I figured it might have something to do with teh balance shaft. Im thinking of replacing my EGR and FITV now. I found a vacuume leak at teh Cruise control and teh car gets better gas milage now.

                        Thanks for the insite....turbo90.

+ More power (apparently barely noticeable),
                            + Less rotational mass,
                            - more vibration.

I do it more so for less maintenance required in the future. Our F22ax motors are notorious for the front balance shaft seal walking out (if you do not have retainer fix) and it will run you low on oil level and pressure. This can seize your balance shafts or other parts. Removing the belt, you never have to worry about this or the rear balance shaft cover O-ring (assuming both are in good condition when you remove belt).

The front balance shaft seal, even with retainer in place, is usually the first front engine seal to leak. Why? Balance shafts rotate twice as fast as the crank (i.e. engine tach is at 5K RPM, balance shafts at 10K).

Also, you never had to buy a balance shaft belt for a timing belt job, saves you money yet again.

Yes, it will smooth out your higher RPMs with no belt, but slight vibrations at idle. If you have harder motor mounts, performance camshaft that lopes or even louder exhaust...this vibration becomes irrelevant and even less noticeable.

                              It's a win-win IMO.

To be honest when I did it I really didn't notice the vibration, As far the maintainece more money in the pocket.
