    another problem, eratic RPMs

I started my car this morning, after putting the new battery in, but the problem has been occuring for the past few days, but when it started the rpms went to like 1600, which is normal, then it dropped to a thousand, and then back to 1500. and sometimes when im driving the rpms will just bounce from like 2000 to 2500, with no sounds in the engine, its just the gauge.

    any ideas?

also sometimes in the morning when i start my car and leave the heater on to warm it up, i get this really strong fuel/exaust smell in my car. coming through the vents, i have a hole in my air intake box on the bottom, would that have anything to do with it
    ?

    hey,

this problem happened with me, with the RPM's going up and down when i was just idiling..

soon after this happened (few days later) my engine started smoking and i realised that my radiator was cracked

i hope this isnt the problem u are having, but just a heads up

this post orignally had some pics of what your supposed to do...so let me find a pic of the part your suppost to adjust....also have you tryed to just change your idle speed? theres an adjuster on the throttle body....but anyway heres the pic...

HOW TO FIX: REVING AT IDLE. with your favorite host ME!! NYCACCORD!!!

        OK HERE IT IS.

you have to do all this while the car is running and revening up and down. dont let it warm up or nothing it has to be when the motor is cold for best results. preferably after being turned off for a while.
OK now Turn on the car and do the folowing.

you only losen the other so you dont accidently drop the top into the engine bay. (belive me it will happen if you take both off).

        INSIDE you will see this

THat ring in the middle controls the air intake or gas but it does not matter. take a screw driver and turn that ring clock wise or counter clockwise and you will here the revs go higher or lower.

of course we want them lower.

so turn it the way that you find makes the revs lower and lower. the more you turn it the more you will hear the engine stabalize. do it untill you have a smooooth idle. it works like a charm.

i did this about a year ago or more. i have not had the problem since.

        SOME problems you might experience...

        it will slowly come back..

that is because that ring will slowly (with the vibrations of the car) turn it self back where it was and giving you the same preblem. SO what you do is what i did. take a paper clip and bend it so that it can hold both INDENTS on the ring and go over the top so that when you tighten everything back up the paper clip will act like a clamp to keep the ring in place.

here is how i made mine.

        UPDATE:

I posted this a whileeeee back.....

if you can find something stronger than a paper clip that would be great. but i have had the clip in mine for about 3 years now and i have never had the problem since.

        ABOUT MECHANICS:

tell them all to go to hell : ) i went to like 5 mechanics, no joke, and they all hadd diff reasons. Gaskets, Vacume LEaks, Gremlins, a thousand reasons with no results untill i desided to fuk around with my engine : ) and it payed off.

        ITS A COMMON PROBLEM:

I hear alot fo 4th gens in the streets with this problem, rev rev rev. its so common i should make up flyers with instrunctions of how to fix it and give them out when i hear a reving 4th genner.

HOW DO I KNOW IT WORKS??:

well # 1 i did it on my own car, but you dont have to take my word for it!!! check out these testemonials!!!

wow..thanks for the fix nycaccord. you are a life saver. lates.

        ::electroverride::

I did it halfway. I started the car, and it was doing the up and down thingy again. Then, i slowly moved the ring clockwise till it stopped. I checked my tach, and it was working correctly. I tighted up the cap, and let my car run. THANKS NYC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

that vavle there on the right is the cold idle valve. there is where u going to fix ur idle when the car is COLD. but sometime it don't work or u lower it too much. then the next morning start ur car and see if u need to adjust the idle. it might be low.
the rpm should be around 1500rpm when u start the car in the morning.

if it don't then u got to take the valve appart and clean it.

having bad idle while the car is warmed up,,,,,,, well that is another story.

so does this just happen at idle, or no? by the sounds of the original post , the tach will bounce around a little while the throttle position is the same as well as engine is holding same rpm.?

Mainly happens when im driving holding constant RPMs, only once that i've noticed on idle.

mine does it a little when its warmed up too... it only started doing this after i cleaned the TB. and also, my car takes like 15 minutes to warm up, its weird...

is there hesitation at all under acceleration, or is this solely related to the gauge?

mine only does it when it's cold and at idle. After it's warm or if I'm holding it at a certain rpm it won't do it any more
