They use cardboard and paper. They don't have good filter media, they are just poorly cheaply made really.
That said, I have yet to hear of people actually having problems....for not much more you can get a much better made filter...so why risk it is the reasoning of most folks...and me. There are actually quit a few web sites that take them apart and one in particular goes into detail of fram and other filters...search...it's there____

I can tell you why they suck. Some filters have check valves in them to prevent the oil from draining out on certain cars. A mechanic once mentioned to me that when taken apart, the check valves in Fram filters were faulty.
But that being said, I used Fram filters on my F22 from 17,000 miles to over 200,000 miles and that engine was still in great condition when I swapped for the H22. So

aren't the current honda filters made by fram? I've use fram many times on my F22 and nothing happened, engine didn't seize, didn't lose any oil pressure, nothing broke, so i don't see why everyone's complaining.

They ARE inferior filters in regards to construction...that's been proven.
Will it cause damage over prolonged use? No one has done a study to test it so no one can say really. But most folks base that opinion on the inferior build quality.
And the CURRENT honda filters are made similarly...the older ones were not...but what does that matter? That's just a company making a change to save an lot of money...not always a good thing. Though it will be argued Honda wouldn't use a filter that could cause engine failure...and I would agree.
I don't like cardboard and paper filtering my engine oil...some don't care...I can't prove they cause long term damage but no one can prove they don't. Choose whichever you are comfortable with.____

The ONLY issue I've seen from fram filters is that they USED to leak.
They have since changed the sealing ring design and now they have fixed that issue.
I agree with TypeG, everyone complains but never states why.
Btw Honda filters are officially Made by Honda, or Hamp - Honda After Market Parts
