    weird random bogging (h22)

Lately when its been REALLY hot like 110 deg. or above, my car's been acting weird. I almost always drive w/ the AC on full now since its so damn hot out and when I do, the car sometimes bogs on acceleration, not a misfire or anything but it just feels like I have 100hp, but with everything firing fine no stumbles or knocks.

I could floor it and it feels like it's got nothing. VTEC operation engages fine and still pulls up there, but even that feels restrained somewhat. Idk how else to describe it. Just feels really sluggish. This is an intermittent problem too. Comes and goes randomly.

I did notice that my voltage, via my radar detector (escort 8500), tells me that it dips to as low as 11.4v sometimes w/ AC going on Max. When the car feels normal and not sluggish the voltage is up to as high as 13.7v. This made my think its my alternator crapping out? can a bad Alt. have this much of an affect on the engine? Its got approx. 190k on it so it is kinda old. The battery is an almost brand new Optima Redtop, replaced about a month ago.

Lemme know if any of you guys have experienced anything like this before. Oh and I'm an AUTO H22 if that makes any diff. w/ a chipped P13 (No speed limiter VTEC @ 4500 and Redline 8000) and have a POF TCM.

To be honest, it could be your alternator, but to some extent, it is just the temps + the AC draw.

You figure your density altitude is probably up into the 4-5K foot range (ours has been above 8500-9000), which WILL have an effect on performance. Couple that with the power sucking auto tranny, and that is probably a big part of your problem.

The other thing to keep in mind is that electrical circuits become less efficient when it is hot, so you may very well have either some grounds that are going, or an alternator that just isn't doing as well, although they will typically fail in a fairly short timeframe. Your stereo may be having an impact too.

yeah it sucks, it feels like the heat is sucking all the goodness that is the H22 outta my life! haha plus my MPG ever since I put on new yokohama S drives has dropped considerably. I used to get 20-21 w/ my driving, now its about 18mpg

aren't the Alternators rebuildable? you just need to replace the brushes and you'd be set right?

I thought those motors get better gas mileage than my car? you need to change it up swap to manual. Then crank the window without usin the ac if you can help it other than that you just gonna have to ride it out. Then after that go and get it tuned.

It's not worth it to rebuild it. Just buy a reman, and then if you get one from Honda, it will have a warranty on it.

Also, I was thinking about this this morning. EVERY JDM H22 I have ever dealt with does this in the summer around here. At least everyone that doesn't have a full tune, and since you can't really tune much on the P13, I believe that may be your problem, especially if it is a JDM P13. The engine compression being .6 higher and an ECU calibrated to run on MINIMUM like 93-96 octane seems to make them not like running around here in the summer. Combine the excessive temps that Japan doesn't see, and the crappy 91 octane and you have a recipe for exactly what you are experiencing as well.

He should be getting way better MPG, so he must have other issues somewhere. My H22A1 gets nearly 30MPG under the same conditions.

it HAS to be the Alternator, my car dips to 11.7v when at idle w/ the AC on full and goes to a max of like 13.7 when i'm crusing on the highway.

Another thing I was thinking about though, could using a Prelude crank pulley w/ Accord Alt and AC pullies affect anything, charging wise?

It could if the diameters are different.

well i did have to get a 42.5" belt, which was a bit shorter than my belt I had previously, prob. by a good inch or so. That was using ALL Accord pulleys, including crank.

i sometimes have bogging problems myself, i have replaced the alternator and other things(clean egr,o2,injectors,timing belt, tune up) it went away somewhat but i still get it, it looks like its a common thing for h22 as ive seen same problems come up here before

It is probably leaded and will fry your cat.

I think I hopefully figured out why my car has been doing this...I first tried to replace the brushes in the Alt. w/ a spare set of good ones I had....voltage went up a little to about 14.4v at peak but is still around 11.4-11.6 with a load of AC, headlights, fogs etc. So I did a little more research after failing the Alt. test AGAIN even w/ the new brushes....

According to Autozone's tester, my alt. is only putting out 30 amps.

here's the weird part. I looked up a prelude VTEC 94' Alternator and its output is 95amps and NOT 80amps like the accord one is. So for everyone who says the Accord one is the same as the prelude one, its not. They've got totally diff. part numbers even though the housing is the same and looks identical. So I'll update once i install the Prelude Alt. and see what happens to my voltage.

But ever since I've put in new brushes in my current Alt. the bogging really hasn't happened.
