    95 Accord ignition/starting problem...

Yes i know, this is a CB7 forum, but the knowledge here doesn't just span 90-93 Accords.

So here is the problem, my friends 95 Accord (EX) is having a starting issue. When he turns the key to start the car, it starts right up. When he lets go of the key the car shuts off. Now if he starts the car and barely holds the key in the "ON" position he can keep the car running, but as soon as he lets go of the key it dies. What's the deal?

First we tried his spare key thinking that maybe the one he's been using for years and years was warn enough that it wasn't staying in position, that didn't help.
Next we replaced the lock cylinder to see if that was the issue, nope.

Any suggestions would be appreciate as this has both of us stumped.

The ignition switch in the column is worn and is not making secure contact. This happened to a friend's accord and she had to replace the ignition switch. When your friend is slightly putting pressure on the key, it makes contact, but when he is releasing it it is releasing the contact due to wear in the switch.

I am guessing the switch is separate from the lock cylinder. But I didn't do the work on my friend's car so I don't know.

It happens especially when people have big heavy keychains.

Yup yup. You shoulda get an OEM style. They contain the switch and the tumbler.

We thought about swapping it out but didn't because it didn't seem like there was any signs of wear. Guess I'll order one up and see if that fixes it.

Thanks for the help, I'll report back as soon as I can.

Couldn't afford it, very limited income. A replacement lock cylinder only ran $10 so we took a shot with it.
