running wires through the firewall

i have heard that behind the carpet on the passenger side of the car there are holes which wires can be run through to get into the engine bay...

the question i have is, after i run the wire into the engine bay, what is the easiest way of getting it, since it will be fairly far down and not easily accesible?

when i ran wires for my aftermarket fogs, i went through the driver side grommet... poked a hole and tied the wire to a small screwdriver and shoved it through the hole and walla, probelm solved

excuse my ignorance but what exactly does the word "grommet" mean?

my dad has some special sticks which he uses to run wires which i may be able to use to get the wire up where i need it
